How Safe is it to Live in the U.S.?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><em>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153The murder rate in New Orleans is close to 50 per 100,000; therefore it is not safe for you to buy a farm in Wyoming and live there.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Makes a lot of sense, doesn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t it?\u00c2\u00a0 When Americans hear such a statement about their home country, they recognize its absurdity immediately.\u00c2\u00a0 Yet, when big news sources (or government travel advisories) make similar statements and implications about Mexico, Americans don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t catch on to how ridiculous they really are.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 482px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Playa del Carmen, El Faro Beach\" src=\"http:\/\/i255.photobucket.com\/albums\/hh138\/beatlo\/Playa%20del%20Carmen%20photos\/PlayaCarmen6.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"482\" height=\"362\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Thousands of Americans move to Mexico every year - and live here SAFELY<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>One of the first concerns many Americans have about buying <a href=\"https:\/\/www.topmexicorealestate.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Mexico real estate<\/a> and living in Mexico is safety. With news reports that focus on and harp on violence in Mexico, it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s not surprising.\u00c2\u00a0 However, as Lonely Planet recently pointed out, Mexico may actually be safer for Americans than their home country.\u00c2\u00a0 While the article focuses on tourism, it is very useful for those considering living here.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The following are some highlights from the Lonely Planet article:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Disney World, Orlando, saw <strong>7.5 murders per 100,000<\/strong> residents in 2010; this is higher than <strong>Cancun or Puerto Vallarta<\/strong>, with rates of <strong>1.83<\/strong> and <strong>5.9<\/strong> respectively (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.topmexicorealestate.com\/cancun-real-estate\/\">Cancun real estate<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.topmexicorealestate.com\/puertovallarta-real-estate\/\">Puerto Vallarta real estate<\/a> buyers can rest assured that they\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re probably safer than in Florida!)<\/li>\n<li>Popular destinations like the <strong>Bahamas, Belize and Jamaica<\/strong> have far higher homicide rates (<strong>36, 42 and 52 per 100,000<\/strong>).<\/li>\n<li><strong>4.8 Americans per 100,000<\/strong> were murdered <strong>in the US<\/strong> in 2010; 120 Americans of the 5.7 million who visited Mexico last year were murdered, which is a rate of <strong>2.1 of 100,000<\/strong> visitors <strong>in Mexico<\/strong>, which is <strong>less than half<\/strong> the US national rate.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Texans are twice as safe in Mexico, and three times safer than in Houston<\/strong>. 5 per 100,000 Texans were homicide victims in 2010. Houston was worse, with a rate of 6.8 \u00e2\u20ac\u201c over <strong>three times the rate for Americans in Mexico<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Although <strong>New Orleans<\/strong> broke its own tourism record last year with 8 million visitors, it has close to <strong>triple Mexico\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s national rate<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Most of <strong><em>Mexico is NOT on the State Department\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s travel warning<\/em><\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>The warning <strong>does not include<\/strong> many popular destinations such as <strong>Puerto Vallarta, Mazatlan, the Riviera Nayarit, Cancun, Cozumel and Tulum<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>13 states are fully free from the State Department\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s warning<\/strong>, including Baja California Sur, Yucatan, Mexico City, Oaxaca, Chiapas, Guanajuato and others.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Oaxaca state<\/strong> has a smaller murder rate than <strong>Pennsylvania <\/strong>(Oaxaca\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s 4.39 per 100,000 to Pennsylvania\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s 5.2).
