In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.topmexicorealestate.com\/blog\/2012\/09\/18\/mexico-real-estate-the-appeal-of-culture-part-1-history\/\" target=\"_blank\">yesterday\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s post, I looked at history, pre-hispanic and colonial<\/a>. Today I will look at two of the central items in Mexican life: religion and the often closely related festivities.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Religious Sites<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 160px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: 0px none;\" title=\"Basilica of Guadalupe, Mexico City\" src=\"http:\/\/i255.photobucket.com\/albums\/hh138\/beatlo\/Church%20Religion%20Catholic\/PilgrimsonKnees-BasilicaofGuadalupe.jpg\" alt=\"Basilica of Guadalupe, Mexico City\" width=\"160\" height=\"241\" border=\"0\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Pilgrims at the Basilica of Guadalupe<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Whether you\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re religious or not, there\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s something awe-inspiring about the grand old cathedrals found in the major cities; beautiful old churches with tall towers and baroque paintings can be found in any town from colonial times.\u00c2\u00a0 Even just the sound of the bells ringing has something magical about it.\u00c2\u00a0 There are also pilgrimage sites such as the Basilica of the Virgin of Guadalupe, where the Virgin Mary is reported to have appeared to an indigenous Mexican just after the conquest; the cloth on which her image was branded into at the time of the appearance is kept on display.\u00c2\u00a0 Not all sites are colonial or even old; one state boasts a giant statue of Jesus on top of a round church shaped as a crown built in the middle of the 1900\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s (Cerro de Cubilete in Guanajato.)<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: 0px none;\" src=\"http:\/\/i255.photobucket.com\/albums\/hh138\/beatlo\/Church%20Religion%20Catholic\/cerrodelcubilete.jpg\" alt=\"Cerro de Cubilete\" width=\"300\" height=\"217\" border=\"0\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Hilltop statue of Christ, Guanajuato<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>At sites like these last two, we northerners can also get a taste of how religion manifests itself in Mexican culture.\u00c2\u00a0 People will come on real pilgrimages; many are not visiting as tourists, and they don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t have a big camera hanging around their neck.\u00c2\u00a0 People may arrive shuffling along on their knees carrying a sick child to ask for healing (some having approached in this difficult and humble way for several miles!)<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Festivities<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 233px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: 0px none;\" src=\"http:\/\/i255.photobucket.com\/albums\/hh138\/beatlo\/carnaval%20veracruz_zps9f0ac73e.jpg\" alt=\"Carnival\" width=\"233\" height=\"151\" border=\"0\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Carnival in Veracruz<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Mexico has many, many festivities. Those who choose\u00c2\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.topmexicorealestate.com\/retire.php\">Mexico retirement<\/a> will likely enjoy some of these, at least \u00e2\u20ac\u0153observing,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d but more than likely joining in; Mexico is a very inclusive culture.\u00c2\u00a0 Just about any important event is a good reason to celebrate good and hard.\u00c2\u00a0 A large celebration could be a long-standing tradition like Carnival, or simply to celebrate someone\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s birthday (often a neighborhood event!)\u00c2\u00a0 Mexican celebrations include lots of food, music, dancing and, of course, tequila (as well as other drinks.)\u00c2\u00a0 You may quickly realize that in some settings, even if parents are celebrating their daughter\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s 3rd birthday, the party will continue long after the toddler is sound asleep \u00e2\u20ac\u201c and it may not seem like what you would consider a \u00e2\u20ac\u0153kids party.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d\u00c2\u00a0 Some wedding celebrations are known to last for several days.\u00c2\u00a0 Just about every community will have its local celebrations, and many of these will also include artwork and handicraft sales.<\/p>\n<p><em>Tomorrow\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s post will be about Food and Drink.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>TOPMexicoRealEstate.com; Mexico&#8217;s Leading Network of Specialists for Finding and Purchasing Mexican Properties Safely<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.topmexicorealestate.com\/buy-in-mexico-testimonials.php?art=4108&#038;web=Blog\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/i255.photobucket.com\/albums\/hh138\/beatlo\/Banners\/testimonials-01.jpg\" alt=\"Mexico Real Estate Testimonials\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This is the second of a four-post series about the appeal of culture for buying\u00c2\u00a0Mexico real estate and living in this country.
