Today I will look at a few other discoveries expats might make along the way \u00e2\u20ac\u201c some magical, some not-so-magical!<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00c2\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Magic Villages<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 235px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/s255.photobucket.com\/albums\/hh138\/beatlo\/Morelia\/Morelia%20Lakefront\/?action=view&amp;current=village3.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: 0px none;\" title=\"Lake Patzcuaro\" src=\"http:\/\/i255.photobucket.com\/albums\/hh138\/beatlo\/Morelia\/Morelia%20Lakefront\/village3.jpg\" alt=\"Morelia real estate\" width=\"235\" height=\"176\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">A Magical Village on a Lakefront near Morelia<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Mexico has a special, official designation of \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Magic Village\u00e2\u20ac\u009d for small towns that preserve a unique atmosphere, culture and history in a way that\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s accessible to visitors.\u00c2\u00a0 These could be anything from abandoned mine towns (like Real de Catorce in central Mexico) to thriving lakefront communities that have preserved local festivities, art traditions and language from long before the Spanish Conquest, like Patzcuaro in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.topmexicorealestate.com\/morelia-real-estate\/\">Morelia real estate<\/a> area.\u00c2\u00a0 Whether they are officially recognized as \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Magic Villages\u00e2\u20ac\u009d or not, residents will find many magical corners of Mexico where centuries of history and a real culture come alive for them in a very immediate way!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Artwork<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 220px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" \" src=\"http:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/thumb\/1\/1a\/CraftsPatzWood.JPG\/220px-CraftsPatzWood.JPG\" alt=\"\" width=\"220\" height=\"147\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mexican handicrafts<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Mexican art and handicrafts can be anything from a colorfully painted mugs or beautiful blankets to modern paintings or sculptures.\u00c2\u00a0 Mexico has a strong and varied culture for art and items can easily be found in galleries, festivals and community art events (often outdoors!) just about anywhere.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Native Cultures &amp; Languages<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 219px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/s255.photobucket.com\/albums\/hh138\/beatlo\/Tulum%20City%20Development\/?action=view&amp;current=Mayan home, Tulum_zps99ee03b6.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: 0px none;\" title=\"Mayan Family in Tulum\" src=\"http:\/\/i255.photobucket.com\/albums\/hh138\/beatlo\/Tulum%20City%20Development\/Mayan%20home,%20Tulum_zps99ee03b6.jpg\" alt=\"Mayan Culture\" width=\"219\" height=\"163\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mayan Family<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>One aspect of Mexico that many Americans and Canadians are not aware of until they have lived here for a while and dug well below the surface is that there are many native cultures still alive and well.\u00c2\u00a0 The most accessible is the Mayan culture; in parts of even major cities (even in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.topmexicorealestate.com\/merida-real-estate\">Merida real estate<\/a> area!), you may walk down a certain street and hear more Mayan than Spanish.\u00c2\u00a0 Nahuatl, the language of the Aztecs, is still spoken in isolated rural areas of central Mexico.\u00c2\u00a0 There are currently over 60 registered native languages.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Expats may also have the privilege of witnessing rituals of native religions.\u00c2\u00a0 While some of these are \u00e2\u20ac\u0153staged\u00e2\u20ac\u009d and are simply re-enactments (very good ones, mind you!), others are completely authentic; some groups don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t have a problem with their rituals being observed by onlookers.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Local Convenience Store<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153What?\u00e2\u20ac\u009d you\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re thinking.\u00c2\u00a0 \u00e2\u20ac\u0153That\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s not culture!\u00e2\u20ac\u009d\u00c2\u00a0 Well, no, it isn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t, but what you encounter certainly reflects aspects of cultural attitudes.\u00c2\u00a0 If you live on the Yucatan Peninsula for a while and venture into the local (independently owned) convenience store, you may very well find the owner shirtless, having a siesta in his hammock.\u00c2\u00a0 Although he\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ll usually get up to see if you need anything, or at least to give you change, it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s clear that relaxation is more important than customer service.\u00c2\u00a0 In other parts of the country, there is a real urgency to please customers and serve quickly.\u00c2\u00a0 In some places (like larger markets), vendors may be taken back if you don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t haggle, in other places, your efforts to get a good deal will just flop.
