The town is located about halfway between Playa del Carmen and Merida (about an hour and a half from either) and somewhat closer to both Tulum and Cancun.\u00c2\u00a0 It is also a half hour drive away from the <em><strong>famous pyramids of Chichen Itza<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>So, what is there to do in Valladolid?\u00c2\u00a0 First of all, when we arrived just walking through the town, enjoying the beautiful scenery of colonial architecture, old churches (there are many of these considering the size of the town, not to mention a large old convent), picturesque sidewalk cafes the beautiful town square and people simply relaxing and enjoying life.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"Valladolid's Main Colonial Church\" src=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-M2dLzeylTLc\/TwkrKxgxfgI\/AAAAAAAAAbE\/wr4oIpcZeHE\/s1600\/Valladolid%252C+Church+at+Night.JPG\" alt=\"Colonial road trip Mexico retirement\" width=\"464\" height=\"307\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Of course, the cafes and restaurants are not just for looking at.\u00c2\u00a0 We enjoyed a fine meal of delicious Yucatan dishes at a restaurant that is only partially indoors; it is under a &#8220;palapa&#8221; or thatched roof shelter.\u00c2\u00a0 The meal was a platter of all the various traditional local dishes.\u00c2\u00a0 Delicious! I can&#8217;t tell you what the meals were called, but I can tell you that I enjoyed it fully.\u00c2\u00a0 The restaurant also sells bottles (to take home) of a locally produced anise liquor which the area takes pride in.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" style=\"border: 0px none;\" title=\"Dining in Valladolid, Yucatan\" src=\"http:\/\/i255.photobucket.com\/albums\/hh138\/beatlo\/Valladolid\/Valladolid.jpg\" alt=\"Mexico Retirement Places to See\" width=\"464\" height=\"348\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Right next to this restaurant is a &#8220;cenote&#8221; &#8211; a pool of fresh water at the entrance to the area&#8217;s underground caves.\u00c2\u00a0 There are cenotes throughout the Yucatan Peninsula, but Valladolid has several especially beautiful ones that are also ideal for swimming in.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" style=\"border: 0px none;\" title=\"Cenote Valladolid, Yucatan\" src=\"http:\/\/i255.photobucket.com\/albums\/hh138\/beatlo\/Valladolid\/Valladolid-Cenote.jpg\" alt=\"Mexico Retirement Places to See\" width=\"465\" height=\"619\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Another charming part of Valladolid is the Mayan culture.\u00c2\u00a0 Walking through the streets, you are as likely to hear Mayan spoken as Spanish.\u00c2\u00a0 Besides food, the Mayan people offer shops of hammocks, blankets, handicrafts, hand-made sandals, traditional clothing (such as the famous &#8220;guayabera&#8221; which is an ideal somewhat formal shirt for hot weather) and much more.\u00c2\u00a0 In some cases, the workshops where the items are made are at the back of the store itself!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" style=\"border: 0px none;\" title=\"Guayabera\" src=\"http:\/\/i255.photobucket.com\/albums\/hh138\/beatlo\/Merida\/guayabera2.jpg\" alt=\"Mexico Retirement Places to See\" width=\"464\" height=\"502\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Since Valladolid has not been discovered by any large-scale tourism (especially not international) it retains a very distinct local charm, and, what&#8217;s more, the prices for everything from a delicious dinner to a guayabera shirt are very, very low!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" style=\"border: 0px none;\" title=\"Colonial Vallodolid Town Center, Yucatan\" src=\"http:\/\/i255.photobucket.com\/albums\/hh138\/beatlo\/Valladolid\/Valladolid-ColonialStreet.jpg\" alt=\"Mexico Retirement Places to See\" width=\"464\" height=\"618\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>TOPMexicoRealEstate.com; Mexico&#8217;s Leading Network of Specialists for Finding and Purchasing Mexican Properties Safely<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Yet another part of our road trip to Yucatan (see Yucatan Road Trip \u00e2\u20ac\u201c Enjoying the Drive and Yucatan Real Estate Discovery Trip Part 1 \u00e2\u20ac\u201c Beachfront Luxury in Progreso) &#8211; a stop at a beautiful colonial Mayan town &#8211; Valladolid.
