As I mentioned in yesterday’s post (Mexico Real Estate \u00e2\u20ac\u201c What Are The Neighbors Like? Part 1 – Expats<\/a>), Mexicans are very welcoming in general. They have a very distinct culture, but unlike many parts of Europe, the majority of Mexicans do not have a \u00e2\u20ac\u0153protectionist\u00e2\u20ac\u009d way of thinking; they don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t see outsiders or newcomers as a threat to their culture.\u00c2\u00a0 On the contrary, most feel that \u00e2\u20ac\u0153gringos\u00e2\u20ac\u009d have something good to offer their country.\u00c2\u00a0 This is not only in economic terms, but they also appreciate and like the North American way of thinking! (It\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s very unlikely they would adopt it, but they do welcome it.)<\/p>\n

When Americans and Canadians buy Mexico real estate<\/a>, most will have a few middle-class (and perhaps even upper-class) Mexican neighbors; many of these will know English and will be people you can get to know as good neighbors.<\/p>\n

The Other Mexicans \u00e2\u20ac\u00a6<\/strong><\/p>\n

As most people very quickly realize, class distinctions are much clearer in Mexico than back home.\u00c2\u00a0 Most of those enjoying Mexico retirement<\/a> (as well as other expats) will also have regular contact with the lower-income working class, perhaps the gardener or cleaning lady, or the guy who runs the convenience store on the corner.\u00c2\u00a0 Some will know some English, and will be as happy to chat.\u00c2\u00a0 Even those who don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t know any English may try to strike up a conversation; as your Spanish becomes better, you\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ll find greeting, chatting and interacting with these people a pleasant experience.\u00c2\u00a0 They\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ll definitely see you as a wealthy person (even if you\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re nowhere near what you would consider \u00e2\u20ac\u0153wealthy\u00e2\u20ac\u009d) but it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s very rare that they would resent your financial comfort.<\/p>\n

Neighborhood life in Mexico is just that \u00e2\u20ac\u201c neighborly.\u00c2\u00a0 Back home, Americans and Canadians tend to be friendly but often somewhat distant.\u00c2\u00a0 Mexicans, in contrast, will be both friendly and very open to starting closer friendships; expats who have been in Mexico for a while usually pick this up.<\/p>\n
