Do you remember the good old days?\u00c2\u00a0 You know, those days when life was more relaxing, but at the same time, there seemed to be more opportunities for everyone \u00e2\u20ac\u201c opportunities in buying a home, in business, in just getting ahead in life without the stress and all of that.\u00c2\u00a0 These days, it seems like \u00e2\u20ac\u0153opportunities\u00e2\u20ac\u009d are only for those who don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t really need them \u00e2\u20ac\u201c the well-to-do!<\/p>\n

\"Living<\/p>\n

Those classic days in the U.S. are a little before my time, but I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve talked to a few retirees down here in Playa del Carmen, and the theme has been brought up a few times.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Now and then, someone will tell me, \u00e2\u20ac\u0153You know, Tom, in some ways it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s like things were back home about 50 years ago.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Why?\u00c2\u00a0 Well, you can open your own business without having to be a millionaire first.\u00c2\u00a0 Recently we\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve interviewed a handful of expats who are now owners of their dream business (see our Livin\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 Mexico Videos<\/a> or our video testimonials<\/a>). \u00c2\u00a0Down here, you also don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t have all the regulations, limitations, procedures, documentation and requirements that take all the joy out of opening your own business.\u00c2\u00a0 Sure, there is some paperwork, fees and some inspections, but it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s kept to the basics.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The economy is also more adaptable to new, small businesses run by individuals.\u00c2\u00a0 Almost anyone can find a market for something they know how to do.<\/p>\n

Is it hard work?\u00c2\u00a0 Of course.\u00c2\u00a0 But talking those expats we\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve interviewed say it doesn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t really feel like work.\u00c2\u00a0 They\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re doing what they love.\u00c2\u00a0 It\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s the business they\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve always wanted.<\/p>\n

Something similar can be said about Playa del Carmen real estate<\/a>.\u00c2\u00a0 The market has a very wide range of opportunities, for retirees, vacationers, families, investors, etc.\u00c2\u00a0 As opposed to the places like the U.S. or Canada, there is less information out there on the large scale in Mexico. With less official information out there, new opportunities can actually be discovered; real<\/em><\/strong> opportunities for average buyers.\u00c2\u00a0 This gives people the chance to invest in real estate and make a go of it without having to be industry insiders.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

And people do.\u00c2\u00a0 I know a Canadian couple who started off by investing in one condo and renting it out long term; they would stay in lower-priced hotels when they came down.\u00c2\u00a0 After generating some income from their first condo, they invested in second.\u00c2\u00a0 They now own their third condo down here \u00e2\u20ac\u201c all for rental income.\u00c2\u00a0 They\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re not real estate professionals, market insiders or even professional investors.\u00c2\u00a0 They\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re not even wealthy \u00e2\u20ac\u201c or at least they weren\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t when they started.\u00c2\u00a0 They are a firefighter and a nurse.\u00c2\u00a0 Average Canadians, average incomes.\u00c2\u00a0 Successful investors.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Their story, like the folks who opened their dream businesses, and like so many other real estate stories, shows that down here the average North American who has no special inside knowledge and no large amounts of accumulated wealth can be successful.\u00c2\u00a0 Kind of like things used to be in the U.S.<\/p>\n
