{"id":5651,"date":"2013-01-04T07:04:58","date_gmt":"2013-01-04T13:04:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.topmexicorealestate.com\/temp-blog\/?p=5651"},"modified":"2017-08-28T16:24:23","modified_gmt":"2017-08-28T21:24:23","slug":"building-your-dream-home-in-mexico-the-culture-factor-part-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.topmexicorealestate.com\/blog\/2013\/01\/building-your-dream-home-in-mexico-the-culture-factor-part-2\/","title":{"rendered":"<!--:en-->Building Your Dream Home in Mexico \u00e2\u20ac\u201c The Culture Factor &#8211; Part 2<!--:-->"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><!--:en-->Yesterday, I talked about how bureaucracy and commitment are factors which need to be taken into consideration.\u00c2\u00a0 Today, in our ongoing series on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.topmexicorealestate.com\/build-your-own-home-in-mexico.php\" target=\"_blank\">building a home in Mexico<\/a> successfully through good planning, we will look at the Mexican attitudes on deadlines, punctuality and holidays.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" style=\"border: 0px none;\" title=\"Punctuality in Mexico\" src=\"http:\/\/i255.photobucket.com\/albums\/hh138\/beatlo\/Culture%20-%20Mexican\/Punctuality_zpsfdb574f6.jpg\" alt=\"Building your home in Mexico\" width=\"232\" height=\"167\" border=\"0\" \/><strong>Deadlines and Punctuality<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In general, Mexicans tend not to see deadlines and punctuality the way Americans, Canadians and northern Europeans tend to.\u00c2\u00a0 Deadlines are often seen as mere suggestions, or sometimes even as \u00e2\u20ac\u0153starting points\u00e2\u20ac\u009d rather than limits. \u00c2\u00a0This is true of appointment and arrival times; \u00e2\u20ac\u0153I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ll be there at 5 pm\u00e2\u20ac\u009d can often mean that the person definitely won\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t be there before 5 pm, but could arrive any time after about 5:15 and sometimes upwards of an hour late!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Holidays<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Mexicans love their holidays and they have many of them.\u00c2\u00a0 Whether they are celebrating Mexico\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Independence or Our Lady of Guadalupe, there are festivities of all sorts for all people of all ages.\u00c2\u00a0 Workers like to take \u00e2\u20ac\u0153puentes\u00e2\u20ac\u009d \u00e2\u20ac\u201c a word that translates as \u00e2\u20ac\u0153bridge\u00e2\u20ac\u009d but is used to mean a \u00e2\u20ac\u0153long weekend.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d For example, a holiday falls on Tuesday; Monday is automatically off as well, and as many people who can will take the Friday before just to make the weekend well worth while with 5 days off work!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" style=\"border: 0px none;\" title=\"Celebrations in Mexico\" src=\"http:\/\/i255.photobucket.com\/albums\/hh138\/beatlo\/Celebrations\/fiestamexicana_zpse72ce54b.jpg\" alt=\"Building your home in Mexico\" width=\"237\" height=\"180\" border=\"0\" \/>The last government (under President Felipe Calderon, 2006-2012) tried to address this issue by transferring any holiday that falls during the week to the nearest Monday or Friday, replacing these super long weekends with simple three day weekends.\u00c2\u00a0 It\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s been somewhat successful, but many will still try to add an extra day onto the holiday weekends.<\/p>\n<p>Ironically, the change has been least successful for government offices and services, which sometimes have even been known to take advantage of the new system to take off both the original holiday (Wednesday, for example) <strong><em>and<\/em><\/strong> the transferred holiday (Friday) making for a &#8220;super puente&#8221; even putting the previous long weekends to shame!<\/p>\n<p>Anyone having a home built in Mexico should take this into account; even if a professional is managing the project, there may be a week where less progress is made, etc. although the project plan will probably take holidays into account.\u00c2\u00a0 As with the\u00c2\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.topmexicorealestate.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Mexico real estate<\/a> purchase process, taking these holidays into account will allow those involved to take these delays in stride (and putting extra pressure on to get things done before a holiday &#8220;marathon&#8221; if necessary) rather than getting frustrated by them.<\/p>\n<p>Tomorrow we will look at the other side of the coin &#8211; how the Mexican attitude to work hours offers a real advantage to building in Mexico.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Andy Welbourne<\/strong><em>, from London, Ontario, has been living in Playa del Carmen and working as a part of the team with Thomas Lloyd for 7 years.
