{"id":270,"date":"2013-05-01T14:52:17","date_gmt":"2013-05-01T19:52:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.topmexicorealestate.com\/brokers\/?p=270"},"modified":"2014-08-22T11:13:06","modified_gmt":"2014-08-22T16:13:06","slug":"why-mexicos-new-president-is-good-for-us","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.topmexicorealestate.com\/brokers\/2013\/05\/why-mexicos-new-president-is-good-for-us\/","title":{"rendered":"<!--:en-->Why Mexico&#8217;s New President is Good for Us<!--:-->"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><!--:en--><div id=\"attachment_271\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-271\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-271\" alt=\"Mexico real estate brokers\" src=\"http:\/\/www.topmexicorealestate.com\/brokers\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Pena-Nieto-Obama-300x214.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"214\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.topmexicorealestate.com\/brokers\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Pena-Nieto-Obama-300x214.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.topmexicorealestate.com\/brokers\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Pena-Nieto-Obama.jpg 630w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-271\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">President Pena Nieto&#8217;s reforms show promise<\/p><\/div><\/p>\n<p>While it&#8217;s always necessary to wait for a while into a presidency to evaluate the policies of and changes made by a new president, there are good indications that Mexico&#8217;s current president, Enrique Pena Nieto, is promising both for his own country and for those of us living and investing here, or interested in doing so.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A couple of weeks ago I wrote a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.topmexicorealestate.com\/brokers\/2013\/04\/the-politics-of-buying-in-mexico-is-the-new-president-on-track\/\" target=\"_blank\">brief commentary on the optimistic outlook so far<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Now, I feel a clearer image is already emerging of this president&#8217;s direction. Let&#8217;s take a brief look at what he has done and has in process in just 5 months:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>important education reforms<\/strong>, reducing high-level corruption in the teachers&#8217; union &#8211; this points to future stability and economic growth with a growing middle class<\/li>\n<li><strong>economic reforms<\/strong>, inspiring confidence that the country&#8217;s growth will increase to 7% from it&#8217;s current 4% &#8211; this would put Mexico well on track to surpass Brazil<\/li>\n<li><strong>proposals to end huge monopolies<\/strong> in the telecommunications and television industries<\/li>\n<li><strong>plans to open the petroleum industry<\/strong>\u00a0in Mexico to private funds and a more economically sustainable model<\/li>\n<li><strong>proposal to eliminate<\/strong> the need for ownership by <strong>bank trust<\/strong> for foreign property buyers, as I have already discussed in this blog<\/li>\n<li><strong>approval of a passenger train in Yucatan<\/strong>, a project which had been in the plans, but has finally been given the support to move ahead &#8211; this will help tourism in the area<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_272\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-272\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-272\" alt=\"Mexico real estate brokers\" src=\"http:\/\/www.topmexicorealestate.com\/brokers\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Mexico-Stock-Exchange-300x171.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"171\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.topmexicorealestate.com\/brokers\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Mexico-Stock-Exchange-300x171.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.topmexicorealestate.com\/brokers\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Mexico-Stock-Exchange.jpg 740w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-272\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Economic reforms are important for Mexico and expats<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Some of these reforms have put him head to head with some of Mexico&#8217;s most powerful figures. \u00a0So, he&#8217;s not by any means taking the easy route or avoiding daunting tasks. \u00a0He&#8217;s formed a strong alliance with the country&#8217;s other main political parties to make these reforms possible &#8211; especially the PAN, the more conservative party which held the last presidency.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Stronger economic growth, growing middle class, fighting corruption, supporting tourism, important government reforms &#8211; these are all good news for anyone living here, investing here or planning on doing so.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I have to admit, last year, just before the elections, I had reservations about returning the presidency to the party which held tight control over Mexico&#8217;s politics for over 70 years in what one commentator called the &#8220;perfect dictatorship.&#8221; \u00a0However, if President Pena keeps up his current direction, it looks like a clear break from the party&#8217;s past &#8211; and real benefits for the Mexican people, expats and foreign investors.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8212;<br \/>\n<strong>Thomas Lloyd<\/strong><em> graduated from Purdue University Krannert School of Management with a degree in Management\/Financial Option Investments.
