Akumal Beach

You look around and see boats, people relaxing and lots of nature.  This is Akumal Beach, about 40 minutes south of Playa del Carmen, or about 20 minutes north of Tulum.  The spectacular part of Akumal is that you see tourism everywhere - people going on boat tours to enjoy the Caribbean or dive down to the reef, people snorkeling to see the sea turtles,  going for relaxing walks on the beach, etc.

Yet at the same time, the village atmosphere couldn't be more intact.  Akumal is a rustic village with thatched-roof shops, restaurants and homes.  Life is relaxing in a way that the local Mayan people have known for centuries upon centuries …
