One week ago, on Thursday May 24, AirTran Airways, a budget airline subsidiary of Southwest Airlines, began operations from various airports in Texas to several locations in Mexico, including Cancun and Cabo; because of the great benefit that Mexico real estate buyers find in frequent, low-priced direct connections, the new flights will are good news for anyone interested in Cancun real estate, Playa del Carmen real estate (which is only 45 minutes away from Cancun’s airport) or Cabo real estate.
From Texas, AirTran will be based in San Antonio and the Austin-Bergstrom Airport, while their planes departing from California will leave from Hollywood and Orange County, and in Illinois from Chicago Midway.
The new routes are as follows:
From San Antonio (May 24):
- daily nonstop flights between San Antonio (SAT) and Mexico City (MEX)
- four weekly nonstop flights between San Antonio (SAT) and Cancun (CUN) with services on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays – from 1 September 2012, the airline will operate three weekly non-stop flights on Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays
From Austin (May 25):
- four weekly nonstop flights between Austin and Cancun on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday – Â from 1 September the airline will fly on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays.
From Orange County (June 3):
- daily nonstop flights from John Wayne Airport in Orange County (SNA) and Mexico City
- daily nonstop flights between Orange County and Cabo San Lucas / San Jose del Cabo ( SJD).
From Chicago Midway (June 3):
- daily nonstop flights between Chicago Midway Airport and Cancun
The increasing number of discount airlines offering direct flights from various parts of the U.S. and Canada to main tourism and expat locations throughout Mexico has been a motivation for potential real estate buyers, since they can see that getting to and from Mexico can be affordable with a good deal of direct flight options.
