The Mexican magazine “Expansion Obras†just released its yearly contest, which awards the best architectural projects in Mexico. This magazine focuses on architecture, engineering and real estate developments. In addition, Obras magazine delivers a widespread to these mentioned areas.
This year, Artia Condos won “The Project of the Year†in the Residential Housing category. This contest receives many projects, of which only 3 are selected. The project that stands out the most is the only winner of this contest.
Artia Condos is a project created in collaboration between AS Arquitectura + Diseño and Co-Lab Design Office and the developer Grupo R4. Artia is a project that aimed to take the best elements of “Tulum’s styleâ€: a construction style that aspires to maintain and preserve the nature.
According to Xavier Abreu, architect of AS Arquitectura + Diseño, Artia Condos respected 70% of the vegetation. Also, materials and building techniques from the Riviera Maya region, such as Chukum and Bahareque, are representative elements of Artia Condos.
The architects behind this project wanted to create a sustainable project, hence the efforts made towards preserving the local vegetation. However, their efforts went even further, creating buildings that not only offer a stunning design, but which also offer lots of natural light, allowing not to use electricity until 7 p.m. Also, every room in each house has natural air circulation, cooling down the spaces without the need of air conditioning. Additionally, architect Xavier Abreu mentions that awards like this allows them to know they are doing a great job. Also, the fact that sustainability is an important part to choose the winner, is a clear indicator that sustainable projects such as Artia have a remarkable impact on today’s architecture.
Xavier Abreu studied at Universidad Marista de Mérida. He founded AS architectural office in collaboration with her sister, Alejandra Abreu. This brother and sister association basically dedicate to house, condos, plazas and offices design. Their firm has 25 architects, whom together have reached many achievements.
