How do you imagine living in Mexico? Cultural, picturesque and relaxing? Or modern, convenient and on the forefront of progress? If you are thinking of Playa del Carmen, try a mix of both.
Imagine the urban community of the future; while still living in your comfortable neighborhood, with picturesque parks, little shops, nice restaurants and excellent cafes, you will have wireless internet access available at all times, all places!
While Playa del Carmen isn’t quite there yet, the city, while still small with a neighborly, community atmosphere, is already moving in this direction. Since early 2009, a number of parks throughout the city include free wireless internet service, available to anyone with a computer that has wireless internet capabilities, 24 hours, 365 days a year! This means that while relaxing on a shaded park bench, you can enjoy browsing the web, sending e-mails, or looking like your working!
Three of the five parks with this service are located in the downtown area. The access speed is 1 megabyte, and the bandwidth is 768 kbps, allowing for approximately 50 to 60 users to connect at the same time; however, chances are, you will be the only one using the service – few know about it, and even fewer have their laptops out at the park; you can also use this service for free access from you Blackberry or iPhone (instead of using paid minutes from your plan.)
If you read Spanish, you can find the service statistics at http://www.solidaridad.gob.mx/index.php/i-que-es- and instructions for use at http://www.solidaridad.gob.mx/index.php/guia-de-acceso. If you don’t read Spanish, no worries. When you enter one of the parks, refresh your list of wireless networks, and choose “solidaridadenlinea” – no password is needed.
In addition to this, many restaurants and cafes will provide you with the password for their wireless internet with the purchase of even a small coffee; there are many such places on Fifth Avenue (the main tourist street) as well as throughout downtown, and in the city’s two malls. In general, regardless of where you are in Playa del Carmen, you will be near someplace with wireless access.
If you choose to buy Playa del Carmen real estate, this kind of convenient and every more omnipresent service means that you will be relaxing in a calm, small city atmosphere and neighborly community, while still enjoying the newest modern services.
Now, it only remains to be seen how long until those city-wide wireless networks open for all are made available!
