Recently, I read a news article that pointed out some good news for investors and buyers interested in the Cancun real estate area; ASUR, which is the operator of nine airports in Mexico, including Cancun International, reported a significant increase in the number of passengers in September 2010 over the previous year. In Cancun alone the increase was more than 14% above 2009 numbers, for a total of almost 700,000 passengers, or 73% of the total traffic of ASUR’s nine airports.
This is good news for investors buying Mexico condos in Cancun; it means that tourism has picked up significantly since the low point during the brunt of the recession and the stall created by the swine-flu related travel advisory. (By the way, the Mexican government deserves a round of applause for its management of this situation; it was fast, effective, and focused on protecting people, rather than self image.)
The return of healthy tourism numbers means that those buying condos to generate income from vacation rentals will have a strong market in which to do so.
The benefits are also real for Americans and Canadians choosing to live in Mexico. The return of strong tourism number means that tourism related activities and services will also continue to grow in the Cancun area – everything from eco-parks to shopping malls. The number of direct, cheap flights available from Cancun (one of the big pluses in terms of budget and logistics for this destination) also increases with more traffic.
