Probably not, is the short answer. Jimmy Buffet wrote Margaritaville in 1977, when he was still living in Key West. Back then this Playa del Carmen real estate region was a tiny fishing village with mostly – if not all – dirt roads that justified its existence mainly as the ferry port to Cozumel. There are Margaritaville Cafes in Cancun and Cozumel and an “Air Margaritaville†outpost at Cancun Airport, but as far as we know Jimmy’s never been to Playa (although local legend has it that he and the Coral Reefers played a private concert for a birthday party in Puerto Aventuras about five years ago). In fact, though Jimmy’s written hundreds of songs, we can only find five* that mention Mexico in the lyrics. So it’s difficult to think of Playa del Carmen when thinking of Jimmy and his laid back Caribbean lifestyle.
After all, say “Caribbean†and what pops into your mind? St Martin, Tortola, Jamaica, St Thomas? Probably. Mexico?… not so much. And that’s a shame, because take it from us – and we’ve been there – that you’ll find more beautiful white sandy beaches, more inviting Caribbean Sea vistas,  more gently swaying palms and more hammocks per square mile than on the stretch of the Yucatan Peninsula known as the Riviera Maya that centers in Playa del Carmen. And yes, Playa del Carmen has a delightful collection of beach bars and hangouts, both high scale and delightfully downscale, some of them overflowing with the sort of characters who populate Jimmy’s songs. One of the bars fashions itself as “Jimmy headquartersâ€, playing his concerts on the sound system.
So what’s this all about? We’re supposed to be selling Playa del Carmen real estate, aren’t we? You bet, and that’s why we’re so excited about discovering the ideal Caribbean retirement spot here in the Mexico real estate market and helping others make their retirement dreams come true. There’s no better place, and no better time. Consider:
- Safety – worrying about your safety in Playa del Carmen? That’s like worrying about moving to Hilton Head because of problems in Detroit.
- The people – the Mexican people here are friendly, welcoming and industrious. No “local attitude†to be found .
- Environment and eco-friendly architecture – a four story maximum height restriction rules out high rise condos.
- Confidence – Top MexicoReal Estate’s experts guide you through every step of the real estate process. No “Don’t Stop The Carnival†horror stories. We help you make sure every “t†is crossed and every “iâ€is dotted. It’s our job…it’s what we do!
- Ownership costs – are ridiculously low. RE taxes on a $300,000 condo? Maybe $300 annually. Condo fees? As low as $100 / month.
- Timing – opportunities are plentiful, deals abound and interest rates are low. Financing is readily available.
But don’t wait. Many others are discovering the Riviera Maya every day.  Now is the time to let us help you get started Give us a call, or send us an e-mail. We’ll be glad to help you find your vacation or retirement home and the “wasting away†lifestyle you’ve dreamed about.
* Desperation Samba, Havana Daydreamin’, Margaritaville (“it’s a real beauty…a Mexican cutieâ€), Tampico Trauma and Twelve Volt Man. Did we miss any? Let us know!
