Yesterday, on Feb. 22, the Mayakoba Golf Classic started at the El Camaleon course just a couple of miles north of Playa del Carmen. The PGA event not only reflects Playa del Carmen’s growing role as a host for international events, but also its firm role as Latin America’s golf capital – a point which offers several real benefits for those who buy Mexico homes for sale in the area’s beautiful golf course communities.
For 2012, the Mayakoba Golf Classic included 132 professional golfers from around the world, including Cameron Beckman, Greg Norman, Johnson Wagner, Nick Price, Daniel Chopra, John Cook and Ben Curtis. Greg Norman is also the designer of the course. Nick Price designed a nearby course in the same area just north of central Playa del Carmen, which opened last year. This PGA event, the only in Mexico, and the first in Latin America, is offering a purse of 3.7 million USD. It will end on Sunday, February 26. Golf in the area has brought some excellent opportunities for both condos and homes, as is the case on the nearby Nick Price golf course (in Grand Coral.) About an hour south, the Riviera Maya golf course (designed by Robert Trent Jones II, at Bahia Principe) offers some beautiful new custom homes for sale.
The reputation of the event and the quality of the courses concentrated in the area has also helped lower-priced nearby developments of Playa del Carmen condos such as Viliv and Awa condos in the new gated community called “El Cielo†nestled between the Mayakoba and Grand Coral (homes to two of the golf courses mentioned above. The golf courses not only offers a good game and nice variety, but also beautiful scenery and added property value for properties right on the course and in the surrounding communities. The PGA event strengthens Playa del Carmen’s image as a golf capital and as a prestigious real estate market – which again is good for property value.
