Yesterday, Mexico saw its presidential elections take place, and preliminary results were released late in the day. While the results are not 100% final yet, it is 100% clear that Enrique Pena Nieto, candidate for the Institutional Revolution Party (PRI), has won the election, and will be the new president of Mexico.
Tomorrow, Tom will follow up with some commentary on what the implications are for Mexico real estate. In the mean time, here are a few quotes from CNN’s article on Pena Nieto’s victory:
Representative samples from polling stations throughout the country gave Peña Nieto the lead, with between 37.93% and 38.55% of votes.
About his main support towards victory:
the charismatic 45-year-old former governor has also galvanized fervent support among residents of his home state and party loyalists nationwide.
About the runner up:
Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador of the Democratic Revolution Party (PRD) ranked in second place in numerous polls leading up to the election. Sunday night’s quick count indicated that he had received between 30.9% and 31.86% of votes.
Lopez Obrador lost narrowly against the current president (Felipe Calderon) and claimed to be the legitimate winner. But this time, it looks like the gap is just too wide …
Josefina Vazquez Mota, the candidate for the National Action Party (PAN, the same party as the current president) came in with around 25% of the vote.
Enrique Pena Nieto will take office as Mexico’s 57th president on December 1, 2012.
