All Mexico real estate owners and perspective owners will want to take a peek at the news later today to see the outcome of today’s presidential elections in Mexico. Here are how things stand just before the elections:
Enrique Pena Nieto
Most polls agree that Pena Nieto is poised to win the election with support between 35% and 40%. While he led the state of Mexico (surrounding Mexico City) to great infrastructure improvements, his greatest hurdle has been to overcome his party’s reputation; he is the candidate for the PRI (Institutional Revolution Party) which ruled the country for 70 years between the Mexican Revolution and 2000; the party was responsible for some harshly repressive actions, held the presidency and control of the country in an oligarchic style, and is generally blamed for creating the government’s inefficient bureaucracy. Pena Nieto claims to have taken a sharp turn from his party’s past.
Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador
This candidate for the country’s main leftist party is typically seen as having support between 25% and 30% in most polls. He has promised to govern both for “rich and poor” and to promote tourism if he wins, although many observers are skeptical of his leftist views and mistrust his antics after loosing the last elections (2o06) after which he staged large-scale protests in the capital and tried to proclaim himself the “legitimate president of Mexico.”
Josefina Vazquez Mota
Vazquez Mota is the candidate for the party that has held the last two presidencies (since 2000.) While the official elections webpage has her neck-in-neck with Pena Nieto (at 35% support), most polls place her in 3rd with between 20% and 25%. Generally, the party is considered to have had good policies for economy and foreign investment, yet has received criticism for it’s War on Drugs which has led to escalated conflicts between major drug cartels (although supporters claim that the efforts will pay off in the long run.)
Polls are far from consistent, and even now on election day, it is difficult to say who will win or to write any of these 3 main candidates off. Be sure to check the news and our blog tomorrow for results and commentary!
