In many ways Canada has played an important role in the development of Playa del Carmen real estate, including the many Canadians who have bought real estate here and developers who have invested into projects. Recently, this involvement continued to grow in a very positive sense when the ambassador of Canada met with the state’s Governor, coming to agreements on important items.
Borge Roberto Angulo, governor of Quintana Roo (the state which includes Playa del Carmen) and the Canadian Ambassador to Mexico, Sara Hradecky, held a private meeting in Playa del Carmen where they reached an agreement on relevant topics such as environmental projects, economic development, health and of course tourism.
Prior to the meeting, Robert Borge Angulo said that tourism would be the focus of the conversation with the ambassador.
“We will talk about the consular office, and the attention given to Canadian tourists who come to Quintana Roo, about everything we are doing with airlines like Sunwing and about the positive tourism promotion we have with Canada.”
For Playa del Carmen and the State of Quintana Roo, Canadians are the second largest group of visitors, surpassed only by Americans. Also, the state is by far the most important destination for Canadians in Mexico; approximately one million Canadians out of a total of 1.6 million who vacationed in Mexico arrived in Quintana Roo, according to figures presented Sara Hradecky. The ambassador noted that Canadians have very safe experiences here, and for this reason the numbers are expected to continue to increase.
In another topic, the ambassador reported that in coming months, the government of Canada will support the authorities in Quintana Roo in legal development, such as training judges for legal hearings.
On the whole, expats living in Playa del Carmen enjoy the same safety reported by tourists and good access to Canadian consular services. This is reflected in the fact that in recent year, Canadians have tended to be the top real estate buyers in the region.
