One concern that many Americans and Canadians have when they choose to retire in Mexico is if they won’t miss out on their grandkids. Here’s an important point to keep in mind; most Americans and Canadians who choose Mexico retirement actually end up seeing their grandkids at least as often! The following are some of the reasons why:
They have more money – The cost of living in Mexico is so low, that most retirees find they have a good deal more funds on hand to spend on traveling back and forth to the U.S. or Canada. Since plane tickets to places like Cancun are only a little more than between different parts of the U.S. (or sometimes even less) and the cost of living is so much higher there, many retirees find themselves strained for travel money, and visiting children and grandchildren in other states less often they would like. For visiting grandkids that live any distance away, living in Mexico can actually help matters out.
They have more time – The same is true for time factors. Grandparents who stay in the U.S. or Canada often have to work more years to be sure that their retirement funds will last. Some have to work part time while semi-retired to make ends meet. These factors make it difficult to spend significant time with the grandkids. Those who move to Mexico can often retire earlier and avoid having to find a part-time job. This means all their time is free to travel back home for the birth of grandkids or big events like school graduation.
Their kids will visit more often – Once retirees live in Mexico, they often find people visit MORE often! To be fair to young families, it is much easier to plan a family vacation to a place with nice beaches, waterparks, swim-with-the-dolphins, theme parks, and fun resort activities; the grandkids will be excited not only to see grandma and grandpa, but also all the fun stuff they can do while they’re there; the fun family vacation and the visit to grandma and grandpa can be the same trip! (Believe me – it really does work this way, even with adults!)
Finally, it’s worth noting that with computer connections that everyone has these days, webcams, chat programs and social networking, you can see your grandkids and talk to them by video every day!
Of course, if grandparents live around the corner or a very short drive away from the grandkids, they may find they have more time with them back home. But even if they are a few hours away, those visits are often not as frequent as people like to plan; living in Mexico may not be an obstacle to seeing grandkids, and can actually make it easier in many cases.
