As you’ll know if you read yesterday’s post (Yucatan Road Trip – Enjoying the Drive) this past weekend we went on a road trip to Merida. Our trip wasn’t all fun and games, nor did we stay in the city itself the whole time; on Saturday we made a little excursion to the beachfront town of Progreso where we explored some of the luxury Mexico beachfront for sale.
Progreso is a beautiful little beachfront town about 30 minutes from Merida that blends colonial, Caribbean and modern atmospheres in a very unique, quaint and picturesque setting. The town emerged as the main port for Merida and the entire Yucatan Peninsula in the late 1800’s. More recently, it has become a favorite for Yucatan real estate, especially for Merida’s middle and upper classes, as well as a small but very present community of Americans and Canadians.
In addition to some very nice homes in the town center (colonial fixer-uppers are a favorite,) out along the beachfront heading east of town there are beautiful luxury, modern condos and homes. The area is mostly been developed by & for Merida’s wealthier residents as weekend getaway homes on the beachfront. Merida is a city where taste and class matter; it’s a city where high society is still alive and very well, and follows norms and customs of tastefulness.
The area along the beach north of Progreso reflects this tastefulness. The good news; the prices don’t! Absolutely beautiful luxury condos that show Merida’s classiness can be found directly overlooking the sand of the beach for prices that are much closer to “average.” I can say with confidence that you would be hard-pressed finding a condo this nice, directly on the beach, in a warm-weather location for prices anywhere near! What’s more, all the conveniences, services and culture of Merida are only a short drive away.
For example, take a look at this beautiful common area in the development known as Coral Blu, which we visited:
This scene says it all – relaxation, beachfront, sunshine and very comfortable, tasteful living! Having seen it in person, I can say that it goes even beyond what we see in this picture.
Kalendas is another condo complex we checked out. This is the view of the rooftop terrace:
Notice the Jacuzzi, the views of the sea, the fine finishes.
And finally, here’s a picture of the ocean view from the living room of one of the luxury beachfront homes. The picture doesn’t show it very well, but this home offers the indoor-outdoor living style where glass walls fold away integrating the living area with the patio and pool area, offering breathtaking views:
(That’s me, enjoying every bit of the scenery!)
Progreso basically has it all – the small town charm, colonial style, Caribbean relaxation, all the services of a large metropolitan a very short drive away, the infrastructure, style and investment from Merida’s middle and upper classes … . Basically, the only thing missing is that it shows up on the international radar. But this is a great point for buyers; prices are still low for high-end beachfront luxury, meaning you just get that much more for your money.
