Are high ceilings just another luxury, or is there a good reason to include them in your dream home?
“Just a luxuryâ€
First of all, let’s look at this idea of “just a luxury.†When you’re making the decision to live in Playa del Carmen. You’re deciding to live in Paradise. You are giving yourself “luxury.†So, why deny ourself the pleasure of high ceilings, even if it is just a luxury?
High ceilings are visually appealing, offering a sense of spaciousness and openness, counteracting the sense of clutter and busy-ness that defines our “life-on-the-run†mentality.
Especially when combined with the large wooden beams of Mexico’s classic colonial style, the concept of high ceilings not only takes you back to a more relaxing time, but helps you step out of time as we know it, enjoying the visual beauty of the place you live in.
Yet, even if we take this idea a step further, we can easily see that this is much more than “just a luxury.â€
Relaxation and HealthÂ
Relaxation is an important part of healthy living – which you will find is easier in a place like Playa del Carmen in any case. Living in a home which offers the design needed for relaxation helps you to give up the stressful lifestyle from back home and enjoy life next to the beach the way life was meant to be lived.
Combined with healthy food, an active outdoor lifestyle (made really easy by access to some of the most beautiful beaches in the world!) living in the right home design can be a real factor in your health.
Temperatures and Airflow
Now, having said this, it’s worth noting that there are real practical advantages to high ceilings. In the hot summer Caribbean sun, a high ceiling helps keep the home cool; even on its own, this is often enough to keep temperatures moderate on the hottest of days. Combined with air conditioning, this helps to keep things cool to begin with and keep the bills down.
Higher ceilings also make for improved airflow in a room, even when windows need to be closed.
Colonial High Ceilings in Modern Homes
We all know that high ceiling are not a purely colonial concept; yet, when they are combined with colonial style, they gain a visual appeal that combines with the bigger picture. At the same time, it’s entirely possible to build new homes using these colonial styles, as demonstrated by Hacienda del Rio.
Check in with this blog next week as we continue to explore features of colonial architecture.
