This is the “other side of the coin†to what I wrote yesterday – Don’t Do it Yourself If A Professional Can Do it For You!. Sometimes, even when you’re talking about Mexico real estate, it pays to do it yourself.
First of all, let’s quickly review the cases in which it usually DOES NOT pay to do it yourself:
You’re new to Mexico – Give yourself time to get into the swing of a new culture first!
The service is free – As with a buyer’s agent when you’re searching
Professionals have access to something very valuable – For example, if you’re renting out, it may be worth hiring a rental agency that has an established international advertising strategy. Or, when you’re selling, a seller’s agent can offer the same.
However, once you’ve gotten used to certain aspects of Mexico and have some experience, there are certain aspects you may wish to do yourself to save money, or to have more personal control.
Hands-on landlord – If you are living in Mexico and are renting out properties for long-term, you may do well being more hands-on. You could save money and get more out of your investment. However, this will only be true if you are not loosing time that would be valuable elsewhere and you are familiar with the legal ins and outs of being a landlord in Mexico (e.g. contracts, etc.)
Renovation – After you’ve seen how things are done, then you might wish to oversee a renovation project yourself. Just remember, having done renovations in the U.S. doesn’t mean you will know how to do them in Mexico!
Especially those who are making a go of as small-time real estate investors sometimes find that taking a hands-on approach can save them money and help to boost their investment. Â For others, the pure pleasure of a new challenge is also fun!
