Should I Rent or Buy a Vacation Property in the Riviera Maya?

Cold weather brings travelers to the Riviera Maya
Escape the cold in the sunny Riviera Maya

With frigged temperatures being reported in the North Eastern states of the U.S. over the weekend, it may have gotten some people thinking… “I’ve just got to get out of here!”  And while many North Easterners are faithful lovers of the four seasons, at some point during the winter enough becomes enough for most people!

This is exactly the reason why so many people from the United States and Canada are flying south to live in the Riviera Maya for most of the winter months.  After Christmas, people are ditching their snow shovels and trading them in for flip flops and sunshine!

Some people choose to rent for the winter while others find it more convenient to buy their own vacation property in the Riviera Maya.  If you do travel to the Riviera Maya every winter, how should you determine which is the best option for you to make the most of your time and money?

  • Do you always stay in the same area?  Do you love staying in Playa del Carmen or Cancun every time or are you more adventurous and enjoy to try a new place each year?
  • What is the length of time you travel to the Riviera Maya each winter?  Do you stay one week, one month or for the whole season?
  • What kind of amenities do you expect when you are on your holiday?  Do you prefer resort style amenities or a more personal environment?

If you are a creature of habit and fall accustomed to traveling to the same destination, year in and year out, it might be wise to consider investing in your own vacation property in the Riviera Maya!  After all, renting is always the same as giving your money away for someone else’s profit!

Why not take that money and put it back into your own pocket while having the added benefit of maintaining full control over your own home; never having to answer to a landlord!

A Short Vacation to the Riviera Maya

Vacation Property in the Riviera Maya
Anyone with a dream can own property in the Riviera Maya

There are properties and budgets for every lifestyle!  If you are a short term traveler who expects high quality services and amenities, you can invest in properties such as The Fives Playa del Carmen or in an Elite Resort and Golf community like Bahia Principe in Akumal!

These kinds of properties are perfect because they operate in a resort style fashion, drawing attraction to vacationers; and offer great rental pool programs so that when you are not enjoying personal use of your property, it is being easily rented and managed while you are away.  GREAT options for those who are investing in property for future retirement!

For the Dedicated Riviera Maya Snowbirds

If you will be staying for an extended period living amongst the locals, and you appreciate a normal everyday life without luxury amenities, you can purchase a beautiful condo or home in a downtown location, near to the beach and close to every day necessities like grocery stores, restaurants and specialty shopping.  Areas like Playa del Carmen, Tulum and Cancun have great options for homes in the most convenient locations.

Purchasing a condo in a central location can be convenient for you while you are in town, but also can serve as a prime location for travelers, insuring great rental capability on your property while you are away.  On that note: There are plenty of great property management companies that can handle your affairs while you are back at home during the summer months.

If your situation is a moving target and yearly plans are subject to change, places like Amara Cancun accommodate the short term traveler as well as the full time resident!

There’s Always a Property for Every Budget

No matter what your budget, you can find a property in the Riviera Maya that fits right into your budget.  Remember that real estate in Mexico is generally cheaper than most areas of the United States and Canada so don’t be afraid to see what’s out there. Whether your budget is 95k or a million dollars, there is a home for you in the Riviera Maya.

Keep in mind that investing in your personal vacation property in the Riviera Maya can be a great way for you to enjoy freedom and put your money back into the pocket that matters the most…YOURS!

Start the New Year off by making an investment goal and following the right steps to make it happen!
