The 2014 Travesia Maya (Maya Journey) wonderfully celebrates the ancient annual journey of the Mayan Civilization as they made their annual journey across the Caribbean Sea to Cozumel Island from the Riviera Maya mainland at Xcaret.
On Thursday evening, with great pageantry and fanfare, the participant celebrated and rejoiced with ancient readings, a bountiful feast and celebration of sights, sounds and reverence for a time honored Mayan tradition. As day broke on the following morning, the participants, loudly and enthusiastically, embarked on a nearly 15 kilometer voyage; with canoes raised high above their heads as they ran into the beautiful, and sometimes unforgiving, sea.  The spiritual honoring was complete with the authentic Mayan dress with only a wooden paddle on which to rely; engraved with pictures and words form loved ones from which the traveler would rely upon for inspiration and strength as they made the ancient trek.  For hours the worshipers paddled as they made their way across the Caribbean channel until landing on the west side of Cozumel Island where they were greeted with droves of well-wishers and historians alike.
Friday evening, they paid homage to the gods in a ceremony of respect and reverence complete with a feast and reading of the ancient oracle by the high priestess. But their journey was to complete… As day broke the following morning the some 350 voyagers once again loaded into their wood-carved canoes and made their way back to Xcaret (or “Pole†as the ancient Mayans called it) where they were received by thousands of happy on-lookers.
The fans and family members were relieved to see their loved ones home safe; as the sea trek home, on this Saturday morning, was much more treacherous then the one made to Cozumel the day before.Â
Nevertheless, complete with Mayan dance, music, food and a mystical Mayan atmosphere, the spiritual journey-ists landed safely home; exuberant and exhausted.
Now if you’re thinking that this may be something you’d like to come visit someday, by all means please do. But the Riviera Maya, steeped in its’ rich heritage, ancient mystery and Mayan mystique is not only a place to visit…it can be your home. Not 10 minutes from this wonderful sense of community, mystery and connection with a time gone pass are the properties of Hacienda Del Rio and Valle Bambu. Both complete with North American standards of building, tropical climate modern amenities and, of course, un-duplicable Mayan culture and mystique.
