3 Things to do in Tulum, off the beaten path

Tulum is a popular vacation destination, far away from the crowds and the noise of Cancun and Playa del Carmen. Tulum offers a bohemian vibe, with its beautiful beaches, small community feel and travelers from all over the world. Here are a few things to do in Tulum that are off the beaten path.

   1. Valladolid, Cenotes and Ek Balam

Valladolid Yucatan was founded in 1543 and has been a prosperous city for centuries, with haciendas producing henequen or sisal fiber, which made many families in the area extremely wealthy. You can visit haciendas and colonial houses and enjoy its small town feeling, while walking on the cobbled streets. Valladolid has been named “Pueblo Magico”, a town with charm that is under the protection of the government to preserve the rich architecture and traditions throughout the region.

A few minutes away from Valladolid, you will find two magnificent cenotes: Xkeken and Dzitnup. You can take a cab or bike to the entrance of the cenotes and enjoy a day of relaxation in their clear waters.

Finally Ek Balam, is a little further away, is a massive archeological site, with huge pyramids where you can observe beautiful frescoes and impressive Mayan warriors sculptures. There are also cenotes to have a refreshing dip in after climbing up the pyramids.

   2. Meet the Mayan Healers and learn about the Melipona bee in Coba

Casa Itzamná is located about 45 minutes west from Tulum, in the town of Coba. It is a traditional Mayan healing center, using traditional herbs, melipona bee’s honey, wax and other products in their treatments. Melipona Bees produce an excellent quality honey and have been harvested for centuries by the Mayans. Also the use of herbal infusions and chocolates made with cacao from the area show a taste of what the ancient Mayan culture has to offer. There is also a menu of health services offered at Casa Itzamna, such as Mayan traditional medicine, Mayan massage, ritual baths and so on.

3.Have fun with a clay massage

Imagine a tropical setting, a relaxing massage given by expert hands… your body completely covered in clay! This is a great experience, is it a regular massage of your choice but instead of using oil, they use their exclusive Mayan Clay. For centuries clay has been known for its purifying properties and can pull dead cells and toxins from your skin. After the relaxing massage and letting the clay settle and dry, you have the option of walking to the sea for a fun dip or discreetly showering in their facilities. Mayan Clay Spa offers this unique experience as well as other treatments and therapies for anyone looking for relaxation
