It is no coincidence that over a million American expats (retirees and others) live in the different gorgeous parts of Mexico. The country is not only bathed in natural beauty, but it also has warm and loving people. The traditions are unique and exciting with gastronomy that has been named a World Heritage by UNESCO. There is architecture that is both modern, colonial and ancient, and a general vibe that keeps attracting people.
The news around the world is always the same: drug war, crime, instability, economic crisis, and an unstable and corrupt government. So why are people still moving to Mexico? InterNations released their annual Ease of Settling In Index, in which over 14,000 expatriates living around the world shared their experiences and ranked their country for living expenses, healthcare, friendly welcome and opportunities.
While Ecuador took the crown (once more) Mexico moved up the ranking and snatched the second place. That’s right. According to expats worldwide, Mexico is the second best country for settling in. That is why so many expats are not only happy living in Mexico, but their concerns for safety are null.
Most expats expressed that they were happy with their financial and economic situations living in Mexico and praised the low cost of living (which ranked Mexico seventh place). Since the Mexican peso hit a record low living in this gorgeous country has become more affordable than ever.
Additionally, the United Nations ranks Mexico as the 14th happiest country in the world. That’s something to say! Expats are comfortable with their lives abroad…who can deny the gorgeous beaches of the Caribbean, the colorful houses of Oaxaca, or the peaceful pacific coast? People are friendly, food is delicious, life is affordable, and expats are happy.
But it doesn’t just stop at that…Mexico offers the perfect opportunity for those retirees who cannot stay put in one place. They might call Puerto Vallarta, Cancun or San Cristobal de las Casas home, but they take every opportunity to explore the rest of the country. Sadly, though, when it comes to transportation, close to half of the participants were not happy with it. Mexico needs to improve on that, but it’s a minor setback in life in Mexico.
If you’re an expat in Mexico, you might agree with everything mentioned above. 41% of expats living in Mexico are reluctant to ever leave the country. Mexico hosts almost five times the amount of expats as the global average, so there is definitely something attracting people to this beautiful, nature-laden land.
Most of the expat population in Mexico is made up of American, Canadians and British nationals, but other nationalities are slowly making their way here as well. And we can’t blame them, after all we are all expats and we are all more than happy with life here. We are comfortable with the welcoming warmth and the smiles in the morning when buying coffee at a local coffee shop. We love the good humor when everyone is greeting each other with hugs and kisses. We love the food and the passion that is put into its making. Ee love their dances, their traditions, and their language. Otherwise, why would we be here, right?
Oh, and don’t forget that property taxes here are significantly lower than in the USA! So, what are you waiting for? Be part of the wonderful statistics of expat life in Mexico. And if you’re looking for a property to invest in…you know who to call!
