Costamed´s first facility was in Cozumel in 1997, followed by one in Playa a few years later. Despite starting small they have grown and are now quite specialized, with a variety of technologically advanced medical equipment at their disposal. In Cozumel, for example, they have a completely automatized laboratory, state-of-the-art equipment, and a hyperbaric chamber. Their Playa del carmen location has similar facilities, as does the one in Mahahual.
The Tulum facility which just opened includes general surgery, gastroenterology, OB/Gyn, trauma, orthopedics, pediatrics, anesthesiology and nutrition. They have an emergency room, operating rooms, a maternity ward, as well as medical imaging (Xrays, CAT scans, and ultrasound).
For those of you who are not Spanish speakers you can rest assured that they have English language support at the hospital, integrating native English speakers in to their staff to form a team called Patient Services (Atención a Pacientes). Foreigners are followed them throughout the entire process, and they notify their family wherever they are in the world. They work 24 hours a day while the patient is there, doing things such as arranging flights, communicating with embassies, and getting patients their medical information in their own language.
