The Yucatan Times recently published an interviewed with Irak Greene, the director of tourism business development with the Yucatan’s Secretariat of Tourism Development (SEFOTUR). The subject of this interview was about the ongoing promotion of the Yucatan as a competitive world-class medical tourism destination. They are currently in the process of putting together a campaign to promote medical tourism.
The state government’s project involves various people from the public and the private sectors, all working together for a common goal. Their strategy is to allow visitors to meet doctors, hospitals, clinics and laboratories, as well as hotels and spas, and even embassies and consulates. It’s backed by the state government providing certainty and credibility to the medical tourist. And the website was developed as a bilingual portal, in order to reach a much higher audience.
The benefits for the Yucatan of promoting medical tourism also extends to the local economy, adding to the recent tourist boom that Mexico is currently going through. Travelers who arrive for medical purposes are likely to be spending money on hotels, restaurants, shopping, they car rentals, golf, and tours of the region. There are also relationship that are built up with medical facilitators, spas and “wellness tourism†companies, which further caters to the desires of people looking for places that contribute to healthy living.
The main bulk of visitors who are coming here are U.S. expats looking for a place to live full time, or perhaps buying a home for part time use. Canada is the second biggest market with a “Snowbirds†population that comes here every 6 months to escape the winter.
One of the things making it easy for all of these visitors to get here is the advantage that Cancun has great air connectivity. The airport has international flights coming in daily from all over North America and Europe. Border cities next to the United States also receive a lot medical tourists, as do other cities in Mexico with large medical infrastructure such as Monterrey and Mexico City.
The Yucatan is more than just a great place to enjoy a vacation. Aside from being one of the safest states in Mexico it has high quality medical services, savings in prices, and of course great people. If you are considering moving to this part of Mexico on a full time or part time basis you can be assured of having the best possible medical care and will be able to enjoy a healthy active lifestyle.
