Hurricane Season in the Riviera Maya

If you are now living in Playa del Carmen or anywhere in the Riviera Maya, you probably already know that the hurricane season is here. And you possibly are a little scared by the first hurricane alert of the season…

Hurricane season officially started in June and will end until November. A hurricane or a tropical storm can be scary but with the right measures to protect yourself, your family and your home, you will be completely safe.

It is very important to be ready and prepared for a hurricane. Following the right instructions will make this hurricane season more secure. Here are some steps to do before a hurricane:

  • Do not panic, this can make the situation get worse than the hurricane itself.
  • Most properties in the Riviera Maya have hurricane-proof windows and doors. Be sure to close them properly. Check thoroughly if your door or windows are broken. In case they are, replace them or install seals to keep the water at bay.
  • Buy at least a three day supplies of drinking water and canned food. Crowds and panic in stores must be avoided.

  • Keep important documents, an emergency kit, a portable radio and a flashlight in a backpack. We recommend to digitalize and make copies of important documents. Keep them in a Ziploc bag or upload them to the cloud.
  • Your cell phone is the best way to communicate with your family and friends. Keep it close to you and use it wisely. Make sure to have a power bank in case it runs out of battery.
  • A hurricane also comes with a little of boredom. No television, radio nor internet for days. Keep at hand books, games and toys to kill the boredom.
  • If you have a pet, make sure it has your name, phone number and address on his collar.

Make sure you and your family are completely prepared for a hurricane. Visit the National Hurricane Center website to check for any hurricane or tropical storm coming to the Riviera Maya.
