What can you do on any given day when living in Playa del Carmen? I am glad you asked that question! Living in such a vibrant and lively town like Playa can offer so many choices to spend a planned or unplanned day. I will provide a few examples of a typical day spent in paradise going from sunup to sundown. Sit back and settle in for a day around town.
Waking up to the harmony of birds singing the mornings prays is a perfect way to start a day. After enjoying the morning sun and shaking away the nights slumbering rest, it’s time to decide where you can have your first meal of the day. There are so many curbside cafes to have a great cup of coffee and a traditional Mexican styles breakfast while visiting with your companion and/or friends.
After a scrumptious breakfast, I found that walking the beach before it gets too busy is a great way to clear your thoughts from the previous day. From here on, is where choices start to play into your day. You can find a place on the beach to set up an umbrella with a beach chair, small cooler and a good book.
You also might want to consider visiting Playa del Carmen’s newest attraction, the recently opened Aquarium named L’Aquarium, just off Playa’s 5th Avenue. It is completely indoors and offers lots of exciting aquatic life up close. It has several large full-view aquariums filled with sharks, sea rays and a variety of fish. There is also an abundance of smaller aquariums with jellyfish, seahorses and other unique sea life. It is a great way for families or couples to spend an afternoon.
If you are feeling a little more adventurous, take the ferry over to Cozumel and select from several activities. You can spend part, or all of the day, shopping the many boutique shops that circle San Miguel’s Benito Juarez Park. Afterwards, you can have lunch or dinner at one of the many restaurants that overlook the beautiful Caribbean Sea.
Cozumel offers some of the best snorkeling and diving around the world’s second largest reef – also known as the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef or the Great Mayan Reef. There are several snorkeling tours that can be found in and around Cozumel. If you would rather, there are plenty of restaurants where you can spend the day snorkeling while having lunch and beverages. After spending several hours enjoying the Island of Swallows, you can take the ferry back to Playa del Carmen and decide what the rest of the day will bring.
With the early evening approaching, Playa’s historic Parque Los Fundadores – Founding Fathers Park, has open air stages for several daily and nightly shows. You can spend the evening watching Mayan ancestors perform ceremonial dances in full dress, or thrill to the Voladores swinging upside down from a hundred feet up. From here you can take a casual stroll down the world famous 5th Avenue – Quintana Avenida and have literally hundreds of eateries to choose from.
After finishing your dinner, you can continue down 5th Avenue shopping in a variety of boutiques and mall like markets while being entertained by the street performers. How about finding a cantina on the beach and enjoy a nightcap? You might even find yourself stepping onto the dance floor and swinging to your favorite tunes. The ambience of the beach could promote having casual conversation with your accompanying date or friends. You could also chose to spend a quiet evening in one of the many parks licking on an ice cream cone or savoring a late night treat. It’s all your choice.
The days fly by with so many things to do and see. This is not to say that there aren’t times where you want to just hang around the pool. There is nothing wrong with relaxing in a lounge chair daydreaming or catching up with the latest gossip via phone or email. There are also days where you are feeling adventurous and want to take a day trip to a neighboring town(s). I could keep talking for hours regarding all the things that you can do in Playa del Carmen on any given day. But the only way to truly find out what life is about here is to experience it for yourself! So, what are you waiting for?
