Just Pick Up and Go! – Living in the Riviera Maya

Waking up to a chorus of birds singing, the Caribbean’s tropical aroma, and the morning sea breeze brushing by stimulates a day of adventure. When you’re living in the Riviera Maya, your options are numerous. Spread a local map or travel guide on the table, close your eyes and point to a spot. Here is where the day will take you.

The unsolicited destination can take you in any direction. Whichever city, town and/or attraction you chose, there is always an easy way to get there. To begin with your adventurous day, jump onto a colectivo, a taxi, or a bus. Public transportation in Mexico is inexpensive, yet easy to navigate and a great way to see the countryside.

A glimpse into a past civilization

If your finger pointed east, it might have landed on Chichen Itza or Coba. Both locations are home to ancient Mayan cities. They offer a glimpse into a past civilization that was considered way ahead of the times. You can also reach both of these amazing attractions by bus (tours are available), taxi or renting a car. If you want to make it a true getaway, Merida is the capital of the Yucatan cities. It offers many historical sites, as well as a collection of arts and entertainment, and plenty of restaurants all within a metropolitan area.

Living in the Riviera Maya – Just what the doctor ordered

Using Playa del Carmen as a starting point, going north will take you to the quaint little fishing village of Puerto Morelos. This laidback community is just what the doctor ordered for anyone needing to take some time off. Puerto Morelos offers plenty of tradition and culture right alongside its beautiful beaches and crystal-clear water. However, if you are looking for more uptown action, you can visit Cancun. It is an easy forty-five minute drive from Playa del Carmen. Its great food, white beaches and fabulous accommodations will make this a stay to remember.

A Tropical Jungle in the Riviera Maya

You can’t go wrong by venturing south. You can spend a relaxing day on several hidden beaches like Paamul and Xpu Ha. Many of the locals like to escape the visiting crowds and enjoy a peaceful day away. The towns of Tulum and Akumal are also in this direction. They both offer tropical jungle settings that eventually give way to miles of gorgeous white sand beaches. Tulum’s Mayan ruins are world known. The chiseled stone “city” was built in the 13th century and sits atop a cliff that overlooks the Caribbean Sea. Alternatively, Akumal is a smaller beach community that straddles the curves of Half Moon and Jade Bays. There are several unique beach bars, grills and shopping areas to choose from.

Cozumel – The Island of Swallows

Last but not least is one of the favorite destination for all the surrounding area. Cozumel is approximately a thirty five minute ferry ride directly west of Playa del Carmen’s port. Some of the world’s most sought-after diving and snorkeling is located just off shore from the Island of Swallows. Spend a day exploring the aquatic life that inhabits the Mesoamerican Reef. As the sun’s glowing rays slowly sink over the turquoise water, why not enjoy a romantic dinner before departing this island paradise.

Living in the Riviera Maya Cozumel

Living in the Riviera Maya has many benefits. Enjoy them all and take full advantage of this gorgeous place that is home to stunning towns. In addition to this, there are plenty of beautiful beaches all along the Riviera Maya.
