Swimming with Turtles in Akumal has been Suspended

If you are visiting the Riviera Maya during September, and swimming with turtles was among your plans, we have important news. From September 1st to the 30th, the Ministry of the Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat) has suspended swimming with turtles at Akumal Bay. This decision is due to preserve the species of sea turtles. September is the busiest month for sea turtle activity. These activities include mating, spawning and hatching of the sea turtle. Certainly, tourists swimming around and checking them out during such times can affect the outcome of the mating season.

It’s important to mention that the Biosphere Reserve of the Mexican Caribbean is the main habitat for sea turtles; being Akumal an important spot for tourists looking for activities such as snorkeling and swimming with turtles.

The Yucatan Peninsula offers plenty of activities

But as we mentioned, this popular activity will be suspended for the month of September. However, Tulum and Akumal offer plenty of activities to do while visiting the beautiful state of Quintana Roo. Some of these activities are visiting the Monkey Sanctuary in Akumal, the Mayan Ruins in Tulum and plenty of cenotes to visit all along the Riviera Maya. Also, you can book an eco-tour which commonly include zip-lines, ATV road, snorkeling, among many other activities.

Also, in Tulum is located the astonishing Biosphere Reserve of Sian Ka’an. Another magical and protected area in the Mexican Caribbean. Although swimming with turtles is not an activity this place offers, you can live a different eco-sustainable experience here. And if you’re lucky, you can actually get to see turtles in their natural environment! Nobody can guarantee you to see the event, though. But being in nature is a great reward by itself.

In addition, remember the Yucatan Peninsula is home to more beautiful cities that also offer awesome activities. For some ideas, you can read our latest blog about 5 beautiful secret beaches you must visit in the Yucatan Peninsula.
