The Riviera Maya stretches along the Yucatan Peninsula’s turquoise Caribbean coastline. People consider its sugar-fine – white sandy beaches as some of the best in the world. The Riviera Maya is a district in the Mexico state of Quintana Roo. Its geographical points start in the once small and very quaint fishing village of Playa del Carmen and end at Tulum with all points in between.
In 1999 – with the help of at that time municipality President Miguel Ramon Martin Azueta, The Cancun – Tulum corridor was renamed The Riviera Maya. The thick jungle terrain was inhabited by the Mayan Indians from ancient BC to 600 AD circa. Nowadays, scientists consider this civilization as one of the most progressive societies that occupied this part of the world. Their marvels are still being studied by some of the most sophisticated engineers today.
The Riviera Maya and its magical vacation destinations
After Spain granted Mexico, its independence in 1821, Mexico has been making its mark as a world known destination. Additionally, it is a popular tourist destination due to its rich cultural traditions, beautiful weather, and stunning coastline. The Riviera Maya is home to many trendy vacation destinations such as Tulum, Puerto Morelos, and Puerto Aventuras. But probably the most favorite hot spot is Playa del Carmen.
In the early to mid – 1970’s, Playa was still a small and unknown fishing village. Its discovery was prompted by becoming more accessible when a dock was built for ferrying people and goods between mainland – Cancun, and Cozumel. This once quaint little village began to grow immensely in popularity. In the 1990’s Playa del Carmen’s population grew rapidly making it one of the fastest growing communities throughout Mexico.
Playa del Carmen: Top Vacation Destination in the World
The traveling world stood up and took notice and so did the resort industry. The 90’s brought mega resorts and gated communities that covenant some of the world’s most affluent travelers looking for a second and/or vacation home. In 2006 Playa del Carmen earned the title as one of the top ‘Vacation Destinations in the World’. With all this happening so quickly, Playa’s government has feverishly maintained the city’s reputation as still having a small fishing village attitude.
Today Playa has a comfortable mixture of old tradition and culture that reaches out to the millions of visitors annually. There are still open markets, street vendors, and authentic celebrations. It also has its contemporary side as well with modern malls and family attractions. Playa del Carmen’s 5th Avenue blends local craft shops with low-rise malls that house international labels. Playa has also built the L Aquarium – an indoor aquatic attraction that provides a curious look at the marine life.

If you are looking for a family vacation or group outing, couples or an individual getaway, Playa has all the resources to make it happen.
