For quite some time now, Playa del Carmen has been struggling to keep up with its growing population. The need for improving its infrastructure is never-ending. As more people relocate to the Riviera Maya, the need for traffic and pedestrian control becomes very crucial. This also includes keeping its large number of tourists who roam around the city’s streets safe, as well. Fortunately, the government has come through with plenty of improvements such as paving roads, and others.
Growing Population, Improved Infrastructure Needs
In fact, infrastructure improvements in Playa del Carmen are a must. One of the newest safety measures implemented by the local government are intelligent traffic lights. There are currently four in place. However, according to Playa del Carmen’s Mayor, Cristina Torres Gomez, there are more to follow. Installing these state-of-the-art traffic control systems will monitor and improve the flow of traffic in certain designated areas. These intelligent devices will help make any over-crowded roadways a little easier for pedestrians and vehicles.
Intelligent traffic lights use a robotic system that senses traffic in real time. This particular system uses cameras, radar and even induction loops (an advanced sound-detecting device) to feed information to the integration software and API (application programming interface). This in turn sends information to the traffic light itself, which then regulates its signal changes to better control the flow of traffic. With this in place, authorities hope to steady the flow of vehicles going through the intersection and decrease pedestrian and vehicle mishaps.
A Better Playa del Carmen for Everyone
Combining this type of technology with improvements made to the sidewalks, curbing and integration of proper markings helps prevent incidents involving pedestrians. Playa del Carmen’s number one concern is keeping its residents and visitors safe. The government will continue to use officers to direct traffic at intersections where there is a heavy volume of cars. Improved signage that warns pedestrians of heavy traffic areas and to use designated crosswalks will also help eliminate unforeseen accidents.
There will be more traffic officers patrolling the streets to assure that drivers are obeying the posted speed limits, as well. Along with the infrastructure improvements put forth by Playa del Carmen’s authorities, there will be more cameras keeping an eye on busy intersections and thoroughfares. These cameras will also help direct emergency vehicles through congested areas by manipulating the traffic signals for their right-of-passage. Playa del Carmen’s plan is to continue installing more intelligent traffic lights for everyone’s safety. Mayor Cristina Torres Gomez promises to keep Playa del Carmen’s streets pedestrian-friendly.
Ideal Place for Retirement
With the constant improvements to infrastructure in Playa del Carmen it is more and more quickly becoming even more of a paradise to live in. In fact, many developments are even consciously making choices now to not hurt the environment by becoming truly eco-friendly. This means that the gorgeous coastal town can continue to thrive while still supporting its growing population and economy. If you’re thinking of relocating or retiring, now is the best time to do it in Playa del Carmen.
