Tulum Will be the First Fully Sustainable Tourism Zone in Mexico

Tulum Archeological Site

For the last two to three years, Tulum has been setting trends in real estate, tourism and culture. Holding on to its traditional origins while still evolving into a community that is economically thriving hasn’t been easy. They have had to make sure that their progress doesn’t ruin its environment or depletes its natural resources. Authorities have done such a good job that Tulum will be the first fully sustainable tourism zone in Mexico. And that seems just to be fine with the locals, expats and tourists alike.

Sustainable Tourism Needed To Maintain Growth Rates

Eco-friendly homes

Sustainability is the ability to be maintained at a certain rate or level avoiding the depletion of natural resources. This is in order to maintain an ecological balance. “The municipality of Tulum will be the first sustainable tourism zone (ZDTS) within a month in the state of Quintana Roo,” according to The Yucatan Times. This will be the first step towards preserving what is left of the earth’s ability to sustain life. The forward-thinking movement, which has been mandated by Mexico’s current President, Enrique Peña Nieto, will be in place no later than mid-October.

Tulum is one of the fastest growing towns in the Yucatan Peninsula. Its ever-expanding growth is requiring more and more infrastructure, clearing of land and stretching the area’s naturals resources to its limits. Thinking green is the only way Tulum’s lush jungles, beautiful coastline and wildlife will survive our never-ending need for space and modern facilities. Officials must put policies in place to create smart growth. This can only happen once the President hands down the decree. This will eventually help curve and eliminate any possible destruction of the surrounding environment.

No More Destructive Resorts

Luum Zama Yoga Palapa

Mexico’s Environmental Agency, PROFEPA, has already taken the initiative to halt construction on several resorts in Tulum’s hotel zone. For many years, developers have had their way with cutting through the dense landscape with no respect for the surrounding terrain and wildlife. With this new sustainable tourism label, they will need to conserve the environment. This is all changing for the better. With sustainable companies such as Grupo R4 building eco-friendly and sustainable communities like Lúum Zama, we are taking a step in the right direction. This is beneficial for all involved, and makes homeowners more at peace with their beautiful homes. Developments like Puerta Azul or Essentia borrow local materials to upkeep the economy. They find ways to build beautiful luxury homes without damaging their surroundings. Moreover, the developer must keep 60% of the land in Luum Zama untouched.

An Example for Future Generations

Evidently, there is no doubt that Tulum is setting an example for other Riviera Maya destinations. Playa de Carmen and Cancun will soon follow in its footsteps. The town’s authority officials have been hard at work on preserving its ecosystem and bionetwork strata without sacrificing much for our modern comforts. Joni Mitchell said it best, “they don’t know what they got until it’s gone.” Authorities must do something to avoid reaching that point. The world will be in a much better place if more cities followed Tulum’s lead.

Now, sustainability is not only trending, but becoming a way of life. Which is why anyone looking to retire or invest in the Riviera Maya should consider Tulum their number one option. Its sustainable tourism zone title will only make it more attractive to tourists. Eco-luxury jungle living means you get to enjoy all the comforts of a luxury life, while still preserving the environment…and enjoying it, nonetheless! And if you’re a snowbird or simply an investor, trust us. You’ll be seeing plenty of vacation rental clients interested in your eco-friendly property.
