Tulum, in Mexico’s Riviera Maya, has been trending over the past few years. And it’s not due only to its gorgeous white-sand beaches, historic seaside Mayan ruins and trend-setting communities. It is gaining a reputation for hosting some of the most high-end, luxury events such as Art With Me, DJ concerts, sybarite wine tastings, food festivals with a twist, and more. The once sleepy town is now home to some of the most luxurious residences, hotels and parties. However, there is still a relaxing vibe to it, with a lively community in Downtown Tulum. At the heart of the town you will find its heritage, traditions and cultural beginnings. It hosts a variety of open-air cantinas, curbside kitchens, and crafty boutiques. It maintains that traditional Tulum ambiance that caught the world’s eye years back.
Hand-Crafted Art and Mouth-Watering Foods
The Cancun-Chetumal Federal Highway 307 runs directly through Tulum.  Here is where you will discover different entrepreneurships that don’t rely on brand names and corporate signage. Instead, they bring handmade crafts, clothing and jewelry to market. Their artwork isn’t off a digital printer but from the hand of the creator. Take a walk down one of the treelined-side streets and smell the authentic cuisines sizzling on grills and simmering in large pots. For less than a hamburger back home you can have a freshly prepared Mexican meal with all local ingredients. If you want to kickback and have a few cervezas and tapas (appetizers), there are plenty of home-grown cantinas and restaurants to do so.
Vivid Underwater Experiences
Downtown Tulum is surrounded by plenty of earthly attractions that would appeal to almost everyone. With the Yucatan’s vast jungles, it provides a perfect sanctuary for bird watching. Spotting and photographing some very colorful feathered friends can bring hours of enjoyment. For the avid divers and snorkelers, there are several cenotes like the Gran Cenote and Cenote Calavera which is also known as the “Temple of Doomâ€. Explore these underwater caverns that exhibit unique rock formations and unspoiled sea life.
A Little Bit of History
The Yucatan Peninsula was home to many Mayan communities like the ancient city of Coba – 30 minutes north-west of Tulum. Coba was a fully functioning city with a pattern of streets, a variety of neighborhoods, and a sophisticated aqueduct system. Tulum itself is one of the last Mayan cities to be built in the 13th century circa. It lasted 70 years after Spain occupied the Peninsula in the 1500s. The cliff top Mayan town was home to approximately a 1,000 to 1,600 people at its peak. The ruins include temples, all types of dwellings, and other community structures. This historic site offers magnificent panoramic views of the beautiful turquoise Caribbean water.
