Whale Shark Season
A great time to view Whale Sharks in Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula is in late spring and early summer months (May – September). The migration of these legendary creatures includes passing through the Caribbean fed Gulf waters. Whale Sharks are on the endangered migratory list and specialists monitor their numbers very carefully. The three main reasons these fish have decreased in numbers are;
- Being a bycatch product
- Boat strikes
- Their lengthy maturation
Some Background
Whale Sharks are a direct descendant of a prehistoric species. They have physically redeveloped throughout the eras of time. Therefore, they can reach lengths up to 62 feet and weigh over 41,000 lbs. The life span of these magnificent creatures has yet to be precisely determined. However, estimations on age expectancy have included up to 130 years.
Whale Sharks’ diet mostly consists of plankton and small fish. In turn, this diet makes the threat toward humans nil to none. Although, they stay within tropical waters that generally don’t fall below 70 degrees Fahrenheit.
Where to Spot Whale Sharks
These large fish make their way to the island of Holbox in May. From there they travel down and around to Isla Mujeres and Isla Contoy where they stay until September. They come to feed on the plankton-rich waters that surround these tropical islands. Tour agencies and chartered guides have sighted pods of approximately 200 that visit the peninsula annually.
Even though they have a name that includes the word “shark,†they pose no danger and makes it relatively safe to swim alongside. When you visit the Yucatan Peninsula you will have an excellent chance of getting a glimpse of these magnificent Whale Sharks. Hence, no matter where in the Riviera Maya you are staying, from Cancun to Tulum, you can always find a tour-departure location. Most of the guided tours offer transportation, snorkeling equipment, and onboard refreshments. You can find more specific information and trip descriptions on your resort, tour stands or online.
