Sustainability Laws in Quintana Roo

Statistics

In today’s world, people are placing more emphasis on preserving our natural resources than ever. Scientists have estimated that the perfect earth could last approximately 10 billion years. Yes, they used the numeric figure billion. They also figured that we have already used approximately 4 billion of those 10 billion predicted years. Although that doesn’t mean that there aren’t other contributing factors that could rapidly speed the “date of death” for the world and human beings. Therefore, Quintana Roo passed new Sustainability Laws.

What are we doing

Now that we have the statistics let’s discuss what we are doing about conserving our natural resources. Some states of Mexico have approved sustainability laws and will be immediately enforcing them. This is the case of the state of Quintana Roo. On February 21, 2019, Cancun, prohibits the use of plastics for packaging in the commercial and industrial manufacturing sectors. This city is one of the most populated municipalities in the state. Any related violations regarding this new legislation will be subject to fines that could reach over a million pesos (52,775 USD).

Sustainability in Quintana Roo

It is a giant step towards preserving Mexico’s world-class beaches and lush tropical terrain. Besides, the ruling includes plastic bags, straws and polyethylene containers along with similar packaging. Mexico has become one of the world’s most visited destinations. Consequently, these invasive materials have rapidly compromised its natural resources. Mexico’s government will allow companies a 90 day grace period to make the transition to more environmentally friendly products.

This movement towards sustainability will put a dent in the 12 plus tons of plastics that find its way into our oceans every year. The polluting of our waters has not only affected a vital source of food. Furthermore, let’s not forget the amount of plastic, Styrofoam, and pet that ends up in our tropical and timbering forest. These synthetic products have a timeless decomposing lifespan. Also, wildlife is not immune from consuming such toxic waste.

What does the approval mean

The approval of ‘Mexico’s sustainability laws’ will create a trend for other countries to follow. Mexico’s efforts will be rewarded in many ways. Future generations will be able to enjoy the beauty that past generations took for granted. The time is now to begin the long and tedious road to preserving what we have left of the world’s natural resources. Once we destroy our land, oceans, and air, there is no going back. What is done is done.
