Just about everyone in the world has been affected by the Covid-19 outbreak. Practically no one has been able to escape its grasp. It has brought forth the way we view healthcare, our lifestyle, and financial worth. The World Health Organization (WHO) has laid-down necessary safety procedures that should be followed by everyone in the world. No matter where you go, practicing simple safety procedures like wearing a mask, maintaining social distancing, and constantly washing your hands is necessary. There should be little to no deviation to these rules.
Hopefully, soon, we will be able to get back to some type of normality. Until that time comes, we have to depend on cities, states, and yes, even countries to keep citizens and visitors safe from any current or reoccurring outbreaks. Keeping public and commercial areas free of contamination can be difficult tasks to accomplish. However, one particular country is making an extra effort to assure people’s well-being, Mexico.Â
Mexico’s safety procedures against COVID-19
There is one particular area in Mexico that has been taking extra precautions. The Riviera Maya is a well-known destination for fun-seeking travelers and expats. With that said, Cancun’s International Airport was extremely excited to announce that it is open for business. This was exciting news for the Riviera Maya and its tourism industry. All the towns and surrounding communities will once again welcome its visitors with open arms. The reopening of such a popular destination will obviously include extreme measures in implementing Mexico’s Covid-19 safety procedures.
Here are several itineraries, policies, and procedures in Mexico. They will outline the directives to ensure everyone’s health and safety. Mexican officials have vowed to implement Mexico’s Covid-19 Safety Procedures the minute their guests arrive. Their ultimate mission is to provide a safe, secure environment and, at the same time, cause little to no inconvenience.Â
Airport arrivals and departures
Cancun’s airport management group (ASUR) is taking all the necessary steps to ensure that not only travelers but also the employees are safe. There are numerous safety measures put into place for arrivals and departures:
- Closing unneeded areas will help control the flow of arriving and departing passengers.
- Clearly placing markers that show proper Social Distancing in all areas.
- Limiting contact with unessential airport personal.
- Frequently disinfecting and cleaning.
- Utilizing PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) like masks and gloves is a requirement for everyone throughout the airport.Â
Other safety procedures will include providing airport officials with your name, phone number(s), email address, and travel plans and itinerary. Airport baggage handlers will be disinfecting luggage and confirming it with a tag. There are signs everywhere you look, informing travelers to follow all safety procedures. These are just a few of the precautions being taken on a day-by-day basis.Â

Transportation
Getting around in the Riviera Maya is easy and very inexpensive. However, with the pandemic, when using all public and commercial transportation, Mexico’s Covid-19 Safety Procedures are also a requirement. The Mexico Ministry of Health provides a detailed outline of its regulatory policies and instructions on their website. They not only protect visitors but the employees as well. Here are a few recommended transportation methods when getting to and from the airport and around town.
Hotel Shared Shuttles:
Shuttles are available at the airport and are very affordable. They offer service to all the major hotels and resorts up and down the Riviera Maya. These private shared services are closely monitored. They must follow all disinfectant procedures and the use of PPE – drivers and passengers.
Airport Taxis:
Airport taxis are the least inexpensive when considering private transportation service to and from the airport, as well as in and around town. The drivers clean and disinfect the interior. The drivers and their passengers must wear a mask at all times.
Private transportation:
It is a Chauffeured service for the sole use of an individual and/or their family and friends. They operated through a company that must abide by all government policies. Their service assures first-class amenities, which include your health and safety. Even though the service is classified private, the driver and passengers must wear appropriate PPE.
Luxury Buses:
These buses are operated under highly regulated government rules and safety procedures. The crew cleans and disinfects every trip. However, this particular form of transportation does have the most public exposure. The driver, any ride-along assistant, and all passengers must wear a mask and any other required PPE.Â
Rental Car Companies:
This particular option is probably one of the more secure forms of transportation when assuring health and safety. The rental companies disinfect every car after the devolution. All government-imposed safety procedures.
Accommodations
On June 8, 2020, The Mexico Ministry of Health allowed hotels and resorts to reopen. They must follow Mexico’s Covid-19 Procedures at all costs. These procedures will keep their guests healthy and safe. Here are a few of the requirements the resorts and hotels must follow.
- Occupancy must not exceed 50% to 60% of the property’s total capacity.
- Cleaning with disinfectant to walls, windows, floors, and décor is mandatory.
- Pools and other public amenity areas are cleaned regularly.Â
- All tables, chairs, counters, and other surfaces in restaurants and bars are cleaned and disinfected after every use.
- All employees must wear masks, gloves, and any other required PPE.Â
Most all the resorts ask their guest to wear a mask. This is not only for the safety of their guest but for everyone around them.
Shops, Malls, and Grocery Stores
No matter what commodity you are shopping for, the same criteria apply in all the retail stores and outlets. The apparent requirements include wearing a mask and keeping proper social distancing. Other safety measures include limiting the number of shoppers entering at one time, age restrictions for minors, and some stores are actually taking your temperature.Â
Mexico’s Covid-19 Safety Procedures suggest that shoppers take their own disinfectant wipes and merchandise bags. In many of the grocery stores, certain paper items and sanitizers are sold in limited qualities. However, most products are in supply and readily available.Â
Restaurants and Bar & Grills
In late June, the local tourism board finally announced that restaurants would be allowed to open. The announcement also included all the beach bars & grills. This is a significant component to the Riviera Maya’s comeback. Like everything else during this pandemic, there will be strict requirements, especially for the food and beverage service industry. Being able to open back up isn’t going to be easy. However, following Mexico’s Covid-19 Procedures will be a guaranteed priority for all food services.
All employees must wear a mask and any other necessary PPE. There will be an added emphasis on cleaning and disinfecting of all surfaces. Restaurants will limit the number of people who can sit at one table. Each table must have a 6-foot separation from one another. The establishment cannot exceed 60 percent of its rated occupancy. Customers have to wear a mask to and from their table.  Â
