Are Playa del Carmen or Tulum Safe for Travel?

Playa del Carmen and Tulum Safe for Travel

Are Playa del Carmen or Tulum safe for travel? That is a question that arises very often when we hear bad news about Playa del Carmen, Cancun, Tulum, or the towns nearby.

Although the US government recommended citizens to “avoid crowds” and “be attentive to the surroundings,” but only asked to reconsider the plans to travel to Mexico due to the covid-19 pandemic.

Several ex-pats live in the Riviera Maya and Tulum, but they still feel safer down here than at home. Most of the developments in Playa del Carmen, Tulum, and Cancun are gated communities. These residential areas offer 24-hour security and controlled access, which means they will not let anyone in unless the residents announce their visit in advance.

The thing about social media is that negative news draws more attention, and media organizations tend to spread more negative news, and people share them more broadly.

What we don’t see in the US and social media is that statistically, there is evidence that Americans are less likely to be around crime on average in Mexico than at home.

Quintana Roo is one of the states that brings more money to Mexico, so the Government of Mexico will not let that money slip from their fingers. Therefore they sent 450 federal troops to Tulum in late October to make people feel safer and protect both tourists and residents.

Millions of people visit beautiful Mexico each year and return home from a fun, trouble-free trip. With a bit of common sense, you can return home safe, too! By taking the same basic precautions as you would at home or traveling to any other country or even other cities in the US.

Of course, every city has its moments. However, it would be a shame for you to miss some of the best places in the world because you were misinformed.

Safety Tips

Well, let me give you some safety tips so you can enjoy your trip better.

  1. Always be aware of your surroundings and act accordingly.

As in any other place in the world, it is very important that you are aware of where you are and what is happening around you. Keep your family on sight and your valuables in a safe place. Almost every hotel or Airbnb has a safety box in the room or at least at the front desk. But that doesn’t mean that you cannot enjoy the paradise in which you are.

  1. Don’t walk down dark streets or alleys.

I understand why some travelers believe they can be worry-free in Mexico, but as you wouldn’t do at home, it is better to avoid dark streets or alleys, especially if there is no one around. Even if you already know the place, it’s not the same as during daylight.

  1. Common sense. If something looks weird, get out of there.

And well, continuing the prior idea, it doesn’t matter. If something doesn’t feel well, pay attention to your instincts and go somewhere else. Here and everywhere.

  1. Don’t flash your valuables.

Again, people use to take out the roll of bills when paying for something. A great tip; divide your money when at home or the hotel room into several bundles of 100 dollars, 50 dollars, etc. That way, you don’t show everybody what you have. Hence, once you know the amount you may use, you don’t have to take all of your money with you.

  1. Credit card.

If you are using a credit or debit card, always check if your charges are in accordance with what you consumed. ATMs are all over but be wise and better use those at banks because the ones in the streets don’t always have cameras. They could be tampered with.

That said, I am sure you would follow these safety tips in your own city too. Mexico is much safer if you compare it to other popular beach destinations.

In general, Mexicans are very kind people and always willing to help. If at some point you feel in danger, ask anyone, they will gladly help you. We recommend not allowing social media or bad news to cancel your plans. The Riviera Maya has so much to offer!

I hope you have a seamless trip, or if you are thinking of living here and want to know about our Tulum home listings, please click here or contact one of our Top Mexico representatives, and welcome to paradise.
