What is the best month to visit Riviera Maya?

Visit Riviera Maya and the beautiful Tulum beaches

You may have wondered what is the best month to visit Riviera Maya in Mexico. To be sincere, we are lucky to have beautiful year-round weather. However, each month offers a different but still fantastic experience. If you plan to visit Playa del Carmen or Tulum soon to go house-hunting, take advantage of the opportunity to discover the surrounding areas and fall in love with the destination.

High season vs. Low season in Mexico

The Riviera Maya comprises Puerto Morelos, Playa del Carmen, Puerto Aventuras, Akumal, and Tulum. Each of these towns offers a different atmosphere and lifestyle, but they are all amazing destinations for retiring or owning a second home in Mexico. Although the high season usually hits from December to January and July to August, the rest of the months are also great for visiting. And, of course, to expect less crowded places.

Winter months, or what we consider “winter,” when the minimum temperature is 55º F and the maximum temperature is 86º F, is November through February. These months are ideal for enjoying a day at the beach! No sargassum, no excessive heat, but still sunny days. During winter months, we usually have cold fronts entering southern Mexico. When this happens, the lowest temperature is 55º F, and the highest is 75º F. A sweater, or a hoodie is enough; luckily, no air conditioning is required!

What are the warmest months in the Riviera Maya?

March through June are calm months. The temperature increases to a minimum of 77º F and a maximum of 89º F. These months are very sunny, and the weather begins to feel warmer. But it’s still a beautiful season with many activities to do. Unlike the winter season, we don’t expect much rain during spring. The beach is stunning, the cenotes are amazing, and the amusement parks are not too crowded.

And last but not least, the warmer months of the year are July through September. During these months, the temperature increases to an average of 95º F. We usually expect sargassum, but there are many other activities to do. A trip to a cenote is a marvelous idea to freshen up and discover the magic behind these water holes. Don’t miss out on the opportunity to visit the many archaeological sites distributed throughout the Yucatan Peninsula. These sites include Tulum, Coba, Chichen Itza, Uxmal, and Ek Balam, to mention a few.
