Is visiting Mexico or moving to Mexico in your plans? Are you thinking of bringing your car with you? If the answer is yes, make sure to request a temporary vehicle import permit.
What is this? As a foreigner or as a permanent resident, this authorization will allow you to drive freely in Mexico during 180 days; the same time as your immigration status if you’re a visitor. It is highly important to get this permit in order to avoid any fines that can affect your stay in Mexico.
You have three options to get this permit:
The first one is to get it directly in the CIITEV module, which is located at the customs gate of the entry to Mexico. This is very common and needs almost no planning, but consider that depending on the time of the year you could face long lines in order to get the permit.
The second option is to process your permit at the Mexican consulates located in the US. The fee is $51 USD + taxes + VAT. For this option you need to start the process at least 6 months before your trip.
If you’re more into online processes, the third option is for you. You can request the permit through the Banjercito (Military Bank) website. The fee is $45 USD + taxes + VAT. Make sure to start this process between 10 to 60 days previous your trip.
In all cases, regardless of the payment method, you will have to pay a deposit, which will be refundable if you return the vehicle to your country before the permit expires.
To obtain the temporary vehicle permit, you need to present an original and a copy of:
-License plate registry or title deed
-Passport, residence card or work permit
-Lease contract and a letter from the lessor authorizing the temporary importation of the vehicle
-Purchase contract or agreement contract under the name of the person requesting the permit
All these documents must be processed in your country of residence.
Who is authorized to drive the car while in Mexican territory?
Once the car is in Mexican territory, besides of the owner, it can be driven by the spouse or husband, ascendants, descendants, brothers and sisters, as long as they’re accompanied by the owner of the car. A driver’s license is always required.
