Magical Villages in the Riviera Maya

Tulum Beach

In Mexico, we call Pueblos Mágicos (Magical Villages) to those towns that offer a magical experience to the tourists. What defines a Magical Village is either its cultural riches, natural beauty or the historical events that happened there. In Mexico, there is a total of 111 Magical Villages and three of them are located in Quintana Roo.

Visiting a Magical Village is a worthwhile experience. If you’re now visiting or living in the Riviera Maya, this is your opportunity to visit one of these places! Discover why tourists keep coming back to these towns and the symbolism behind each one.

These are the 3 Magical Villages that you can visit if you are in Quintana Roo:

Bacalar

This amazing village is the home to a lagoon with the same name, which is also known as the 7- color lagoon due to its impressive colors. Located about 28 miles away from Chetumal, it’s said that Bacalar was the first city in the region taken by the Spanish conquerors in 1543. Later, in the 17th century, the pirates arrived and sacked the town. An old fort located right by the square is a memento to this part of Bacalar’s history.  You still can visit the fort and wander through its halls.

Another interesting fact about Bacalar is that some of the oldest organisms inhabit there, these could hold ancient secrets that could help to solve the origin of life.

Bacalar history is really outrageous, that’s why it was named a Magical Village in 2006.

Isla Mujeres

This beautiful island is one of the hidden secrets of Quintana Roo. The name of this town translates to “Women Island”, a mysterious name that reflects the sacred value that this island had for the Mayans and the impression it made to the Spanish conquerors who first arrived and found a myriad of images of Maya goddesses drawn everywhere on the island.

Visiting this beautiful village is a must. If all you need is to relax, here you’ll find crystal clear waters and tranquil beaches with amazing reefs. This is the perfect spot if you want to practice some snorkeling or diving.

Tulum

If you want to soak in the Mayan culture, Tulum is the perfect place to do it. This town is home of one of the most stunning archaeological areas in the Yucatan Peninsula, located on a cliff and right in front of the Caribbean Sea, you can have the incomparable experience of taking a dip in the ocean to cool down while enjoying the view of this magnificent place. For another unforgettable experience, enjoy a warm night gazing at the starry sky in Tulum.

Another must-visit in Tulum is the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve, declared a World Heritage Site by the UNESCO, it’s a place that will make you want to live in the Riviera Maya forever.

So, if you want to have a unique and unforgettable experience, visit the Magical Villages all around Mexico. And if you’re currently living in the Riviera Maya, make sure to visit these 3 wonderful Magical Villages that will leave you wanting for more.
