separating trash

The municipality of Solidaridad, where Playa del Carmen and Puerto Aventuras are located, just started to separate the trash.

Although the program was announced some months ago, it officially started on August 5th. This program’s goal is to help reduce the environmental pollution. Also, to accomplish many others positive impacts on our town. We all deserve a cleaner city and taking care of our environment is in our hands. As a citizens of Solidaridad, we all have to participate in this new program!

If you haven’t heard how the separation of trash will work, find it here:

Monday, Wednesday and Saturday Organic and inorganic waste
Tuesday Paper, cardboard and glass bottles
Thursday Plastic, aluminum and tin

The trash collecting schedule is:

  • Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
  • Saturdays from 7:00 am to 1:00 p.m.

In addition, we are also happy to share these 5 easy tips for separating trash!

  1. Have 2 different containers for each, organic and inorganic waste. Since egg carton has already passed through all the recycle processes, it is considered an inorganic waste.
  2. Have 2 different containers for Tuesdays and Thursdays. You can put paper, cardboard and glass bottles in the same trash bag. This can also apply to plastic, aluminum and tin. We also recommend to use transparent bags, so collectors can easily identify the kind of waste.
  3. Respect the assigned days for each category of waste. If there’s trash that doesn’t correspond to the schedule, collectors will not pick it up.
  4. In addition, wash and clean cans and bottles before putting it into the garbage.
  5. Drugs and batteries generate chemical compounds that could be dangerous. Events such as “Reciclaton” handle this kind of wastes in the proper way.
