How to Reduce Energy Costs When Living in Mexico

Mexico’s cost of living in general is much less than many other developing countries. But, no matter where you choose to live or spend any length of time, energy costs will always be a volatile expense.

Here are a few simple suggestions to reduce energy costs during the warmer months of the year:

  • During the hottest part of the day make sure you pull down your shades or sun-blocking curtains. This especially if there are certain times of the day when you get direct sunlight coming through.
  • Replace your incandescent bulbs with LED – Light-emitting diode. LED lights are far more energy saving vs. the traditional incandescent and they last much longer.
  • Keep your air conditioner(s) thermostats at a reasonable setting. Example; if its 100 degrees outside, your AC unit(s) should be set for around 79. Don’t bury your thermostat at 70 degrees and expect it to maintain that temperature. That does nothing but run your electrical bill sky high. Also, at the same time, it burns out the compressors – creating a maintenance expense.
  • With the Riviera Maya having tempered weather year-round, taking a hot – steaming shower isn’t always necessary. Keeping your water heater’s thermostat set to a lower temperature will again save energy.
  • When leaving your condo/home during the day, adjusting your AC(s) thermostat to 80, turning off unnecessary lights and ceiling fans can save energy.
  • Keep unused rooms closed up. Air conditioning rooms that are not being used is simply a waste of energy. You should also consider closing your bedroom door at night and adjust the rest of the home’s AC units to an appropriate temperature.

These simple suggestions can lower your energy bill 10, 20 and possibly 30 percent or more

There are times in the warmer months that you might have to bite the bullet and lower your air conditioner(s) thermostat slightly lower than 79. However, keep in mind that you can always upgrade your AC unit(s) to energy efficient ‘Inverted Air Conditioner’. These newly designed units cost more, but in the long run will save you money.

Use common sense and always be looking for energy saving ideas. Simple things like closing the door when going outside quickly keeps cool air in and warm air out. Taking shorter showers, turning off lights when leaving a room and isolating unused spaces can keep you in the green within Mexico’s CFE (Federal Electricity Commission) tiered pricing.
