The Benefits of Expat Life in the Riviera Maya

Expat Riviera Maya

We could very well sell you on the idea of moving to the Riviera Maya thanks to its year-round warm weather, the turquoise waters of the Caribbean Sea and the friendliness of its people. But, you already know that. However, there are plenty of evident benefits to embracing expat life. It opens up your mind and your world and prepares you for plenty of future opportunities. All this is especially true when moving abroad with children. Nurturing them in an open environment is great for their future. It doesn’t matter if your pursuing a golf dream, a fishing lifestyle, or just want to start from zero. Moving abroad is an opportunity you should take. So, here are our five top soft benefits of embracing expat life in the Riviera Maya.

International Environment, Local Culture

international

One of the first things people realize when they make the move to the Riviera Maya is how international it actually is. This is a huge benefit so as not to close doors to other cultures, traditions and nationalities. In fact, enrolling your children in one of Playa del Carmen’s international schools will guarantee they have classmates from all over the world. This will help you and your family develop awareness, respect and empathy for others’ traditions and cultures. However, Mexican folklore and culture is very present in the region, as well. This means that while you still enjoy an international environment, you get to learn about the local customs, too.

Developing New Language Skills

Unless you come from a Spanish-speaking country, or already speak the language, moving to Mexico will allow you to explore new language skills. Children especially have the ability to learn a language faster, which will give them an advantage in their future. However, adults can also learn the language. Living in a country that speaks it will require you to practice it for simple tasks such as grocery shopping, asking for directions, going to the theater, and others. While many people speak English in the Riviera Maya, try your hardest to learn the language and practice as often as possible.

Making New Friends and Bonding

Friends

When you relocate to a new country, regardless of which one, you will find yourself alone. This is the perfect time to set your shyness aside and start making new friends. Developing this skill will open plenty of doors in your future. Coming out of your shell, going out of your way and visiting places by yourself will help you in becoming more of an extrovert. This is especially true in a new country. If you’re relocating with family, it’s a great time to bond with them. You will all be going through the same cultural shock, which means you will be closer than ever before. Embrace this opportunity to learn more about each other and help one another be the best version of themselves.

Own Less, Do More

Relocation requires a lot of organization. This is a great time to minimalize your belongings and rid yourself of things that are not necessary in your life. Many expats board the plane with one piece of luggage and start anew in the Riviera Maya. Luckily, Cancun and Playa del Carmen are very “Americanized”, which means you won’t be missing much of the stuff you’re used to back home. Pack stuff that you truly need and once you get to your destination, you can start purchasing whatever you feel necessary. Becoming an expat is also a great way to start doing more, not only for yourself but those around you. Help out at shelters to make new friends. Visit communities in need to leave your print. Teach English or any other language to share your knowledge. It’s your chance to become a greater person.

Never Stop Learning

Family at the beach

Besides enjoying the beauty of the Riviera Maya, savoring the delicious gastronomy and making friends with the vibrant locals, becoming an expat in the area means you never stop learning. There are hundreds of things to learn in the region. We’re not just talking about the culture and its customs. The opportunity to learn new things comes from snorkeling with whale sharks, scuba diving with sea turtles, helping with beach clean ups, recycling your waste, and more. From learning Spanish, salsa, cooking to learning about different cultures from international friends, becoming an expat opens a literal world of opportunities. Don’t miss the train on that!

Moving to another country might sound terrifying. Leaving everything you know behind and starting afresh is scary. However, the worst thing would be never actually taking the leap. With the array of flights between Cancun and major cities in the US and Canada, you will never be homesick. Thousands of expats are already living the Caribbean dream. Additional to all the aforementioned benefits, you will also see increible living savings, amazing medical care, and much more. Take the chance – whether alone or with family – and embrace the expat life!
