3 Advantages of Living in Mexico’s Riviera Maya

Retirement to the Riviera Maya

Approximately 1% of Mexico’s whole population is foreign. Out of those, about 60,000 live in Playa del Carmen in the Riviera Maya. So, why aren’t you? 80 miles of white-sand beaches between Cancun and Tulum, bathed in sunshine 240 days a year make the Riviera Maya a tropical paradise. But the Riviera Maya is much more than that. Here are three advantages of living in Mexico’s Riviera Maya.

Rich nature, history and culture

Chichen Itza

The Riviera Maya is infused with rich Maya influences. They built majestic pyramids and ancient cities, which you can still visit in the jungle today. The museums in Cancún, Chetumal and Cozumel bring this fascinating history to life.

Mexicans enjoy festivals, parades, fireworks, processions, and pilgrimages. Take part and fall in love with these lively celebrations. Besides, who would ever pass up an opportunity to party?

For nature lovers, the options are endless: tropical rainforests, caves, nature reserves, jungle eco parks, stunning lakes (like Bacalar or Kaan Luum). And then cenotes, our unique ecosystem. Swim in crisp mineral-rich waters in these magical limestone caves or under a jungle-framed sky and feel lost in time. These sinkholes were formed millions of years ago, and are connected by underground rivers, popular with divers. The world’s second largest coral reef attracts lovers of fishing, diving, boating, and snorkeling.

Cost of living

Cancun Hotel Zone

Mexico gives you a life you can’t afford elsewhere. Modern condos have high standards. The same as you would have in Canada, the US or Europe, but for a fraction of the price (and often with pool). High-speed internet is available. Cable TV includes sports and movie options. The cell phone network is widespread and reliable. You won’t be missing anything from back home.

In Playa del Carmen, a 1,200-square-foot condo costs $125,000 to $175,000. In Cancún accommodation is even cheaper. To rent long-term, you can find an apartment from $500 to $1,500 a month. The ‘better life’ part often includes a cleaner, gardener, or inexpensive babysitter.

When it comes to food, it can be as cheap as $1 or as expensive as you like. You can eat at a corner taco stand for a couple of dollars or enjoy lime soup and cochinita pibil (marinated pork) for about 200 pesos (about $10). Cooking at home, you will save even more. A week’s food costs about $50 per person.

Mexico enjoys good and affordable healthcare, too. Several hospitals offer first-class services at reasonable prices, usually about one third of the cost north of the border. The same applies to dental care. In fact, medical tourism is a huge industry in Mexico’s Riviera Maya due to the professionalism of doctors and dentists and the price.

Mexico is very accessible (with several international airports), and the national bus service is excellent. When it comes to moving locally, you can rely perfectly on rather inexpensive taxi fares or colectivos for about 6 pesos ($0.32).

Better quality of life

There is a reason why Mexico constantly shows up on the top 10 destinations to retire to. You will love everyone in Mexico. Locals are warm and friendly; they will always greet you with a smile. In the Riviera Maya everything is walkable and easily accessible, allowing you to spend plenty of time outdoors and stay healthier.

You will go out often and listen to live music and dance, regardless of age. Sure, you will have to be patient: waiting for the plumber, banks or Telcel (paying for your WiFi or phone) but once you accept their ways, you will relax. Focus on the good experiences that Mexicans will bring you through their warmth and generosity. Appreciate other ways of life and become a richer person.

Truth be told, there is nothing quite like life in the Riviera Maya. And with so many beautiful beaches to choose from for your weekend plans, you’re spoiled for choices. So, what are you waiting for? Start searching for the perfect retirement, vacation or investment home in Playa del Carmen, Tulum or Cancun and make Mexico your forever home.
