Choosing a Place for Mexico Retirement & Services Available

Filed Under: BB Kits, Cost of Living in Mexico, How to Buy Property in Mexico, How to Find Retirement Communities in Mexico, Mexican Retirement Communities, Mexico Cost of Living, Mexico Retirement Living, Retirement Communities in Mexico

One of the main motivations for choosing one location over another for Mexico retirement is the number of services located nearby.  On the other hand, retirees have no need to choose a place close to services they don’t need or want.

The following is a list of some of the most important services Mexico offers retirees.  Some real estate markets, like Cancun or Puerto Vallarta real estate, offer just about all of them, with numerous options nearby.  Others, like Playa del Carmen real estate, offer most of them in a small-town setting, but are less than an hour away from a larger city (in this case Cancun), where all the rest can easily be found.  Others only offer a handful of basic services, but the retirees who choose those places don’t feel they need more.

Excellent Healthcare – Mexico’s private hospitals are considered to be improving greatly and will be near to par with those in the U.S.; the biggest official difference is that they cost 50-70% less.  Expats usually point out that the service is more personalized, and that waiting lines are virtually non-existent. High-quality small practices are also readily available, even in communities where there are no large hospitals.

International Airports – One of the key benefits Mexico offers over other parts of the world is access to the U.S.  The number of international airports is growing, and many of Mexico’s favorite retirement locations are already within less than an hours drive of an airport which offers direct flights to most major U.S. and Canadians cities.  A growing number of discount airlines offering service to Mexico also mean that it is easier and cheaper to travel back home, or for friends and family to come visit.  A large number of other locations offer many connecting flight options.

Golf and Marinas – Living in warm weather all year round means retirees can enjoy outdoor activities all year round as well. Besides a growing number of golf courses and marina developments, there are also nature theme parks, wild-life reserves, camping areas and many other ways to enjoy the great outdoors.

Shopping Malls – These go hand in hand with large international stores like Walmart, and good access to many of the same food and household items retirees are used to buying from back home.  There are also large-screen movie theaters; Hollywood movies are usually played in English with Spanish subtitles.

Restaurants – Most expats fall in love with Mexico food, but many locations also have restaurants that serve food from all over the world, including everything from American fast food to Japanese high cuisine.

When choosing your retirement community, take a look at this list, and make a checklist of the items you need or prefer to have close by.  Talk to an experienced agent, who will be able to help you identify an area.
