How to Save Money Living in Mexico; Healthcare – Cost & Quality

Filed Under: BB Kits, Cost of Living in Mexico, How to Save Money Living in Mexico, Mexico Cost of Living, Mexico Hospitals, Mexico Retirement affordable living, Mexico Retirement Living

One of the most important parts of making the leap, buying Mexico real estate and choosing to live in Mexico for retirement is the cost of living.  Healthcare is one of the key factors in these savings.

Mexico retirement offers savings in many aspects, starting right from the beginning when you make your first step and buy a property near the beachfront, in an old colonial town, or on the shores of a lake in the country’s hilly central region.  Properties simply cost less here – noticeably less.

From there, the savings just build up, one on top of another, making much easy to manage a retirement budget and enjoy retirement more while living in a warm climate in a place with many things to do, and an amazing culture.

One the main concerns for retirees these days is healthcare; and concerns about costs, quality and wait times are increasing with every year.  This is why healthcare is one of the most important items where retirees in Mexico will enjoy savings – HUGE savings – and high quality at the same time.

Typically, healthcare in Mexico is 50-70% less than in the U.S.!  The following are three examples which demonstrate this fact well:

  • a visit to the doctor – $20 to $50
  • a hip replacement $12,000 – compare to the U.S.: $43,000 and $63,000
  • a coronary bypass $21,000 – compare to the U.S.:$149,000

(The money saved on a very major procedure like the coronary bypass is the value of a nice condo near the beach!)

We all hope that the day never comes when we have to get a very major procedure done, but should it be necessary one day, it’s good to know that it’s not going cost us a much bigger chunk of our savings than we can really afford, and our finances will still be in tact afterwards.

Mexico’s healthcare system also offers other benefits, including:

  • house calls, which are still fairly common practice in Mexico, and are nice when it’d simply be better to relax in bed!
  • no wait times; in private hospitals it’s rare that a patient will need to wait for any major process which that hospital offers

It’s clear that Mexican hospitals are cheaper,  but you may be wondering, “What about the quality?”

The reality is, much better than you’d probably expect.  The World Health Organization (WHO) has rated the quality of service, equipment and procedures in general of private Mexico hospitals on par with those of U.S.!!

Not only will you  be receiving less expensive healthcare, but the quality will be just as good, with a good possibility that it will be better – especially for those of us living on a budget.

This will allow you to be at ease about both your health and your finances, allowing you to relax and enjoy your warm-weather retirement to its fullest!
