Cozumel Real Estate – Community Finishes Traditional Celebration

Filed Under: Cozumel Real Estate, Living in Mexico, Mexico Culture, Mexico Festivals and Events, Rita Sheese

One of the many reasons people buy Mexico real estate is to witness and even participate in the country’s rich history and traditions. Cozumel real estate owners are among those with the unique balance of being a modern tourist destination which also preserves its age-old traditions.

Just recently, on May 3, Cozumel finished the celebration of its “Cabeza de Cochino” festivities (“Pig’s Head” in English.) At the festivities, warm conviviality prevailed with the hundreds of families and residents of the El Cedral community who gathered to witness the traditional dance of the Pig’s Head, in the community’s main palapa (a traditional thatched-roof structure.)

The festival is very traditional, yet it is becoming increasingly popular; this year the governor of the state of Quintana Roo (which includes Cancun, Playa del Carmen and Tulum as well) attended with family members and other dignitaries.

“It’s a big party involving all residents of the island” explained the governor, emphasizing the family-oriented nature of the festivities.  “Above all it is important to promote Cozumel’s cultural tradition. This is a traditional family holiday and so we have to keep it, so we will continue doing so.”

As with most celebrations in Mexico, there is a religious angle, combining Christian festivities with local and often pre-hispanic traditions.  On the most important night of the fair, the Day of the Holy Cross, about 92 families participated in traditional dances, with women dressed in evening dresses for the occasion and men with Mayan-style pants and white guayabera shirts, very traditional to the Yucatan Peninsula.  Of course, music was a very important part of the festivities!
